Power Steering Suddenly Gone

My wife was driving and suddenly lost power steering. I cannot say the sequence of events that happened as I was not driving. From what I understand, the last trip she took to the grocery store she encountered some issues of power steering pump whining and being hard to turn. She only drove the car about a mile and said she heard nothing on her way there. On her way back, it became difficult to drive (turn the wheels) until it got the point to where she could not turn it all and had it towed to our house from a busy highway (she luckily got it into a turn lane). When i looked under the hood i could see splatters of fluid all over the engine compartment and a pools of fluid on the undercarriage. Anyboybody have any ideas?

That definitely sounds like a power steering pump problem. Most likely, you have a burst hose.

You are correct (as usual). The shop said: "crack in the power steering hose". Im guessing there are multiple hoses and have no idea which one if so. Im interested in getting the invoice to find out what they actually replaced and if it was something that we could have done ourselves.

I'm guessing that the hose did not rupture spontaneously and had been leaking before failing. Is that safe to assume?

Sometime the leak, but sometime they just develop a weak spot, a bubble forms, and then bursts. As for being a DIY, technically, anything is a DIY as long as you have the right tools and kills.
