It seems like everyone that reviews the new 6.3L engine just loves it. I am dying to try it out. So will we ever get a W209 CLK63 coupe?

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupé
I would imagine that it would not be too terribly difficult to drop the motor into a 208 from a technical viewpoint. Cost is another matter. The 55 motor never wears out. A 63 motor out of the crate ain't going to be cheap.

Still, I plan to ask AMG about just such a swap later on this year.

But it already looks clear that a Kleemann S/C is the relatively cheap way to match or rather exceed the 63's output and keep that charming 208 base.

Still, I think I would prefer listening to that 63 at high rpms ....

'specially if you could get the seven-speed to go in there as well!

we all know that money talks... anything is possible

on another note... it's a shame the 208 evolved into a c-class coupe with the 209... i feel the 208 has such a distinct look and being that it looked like the 210 e-class - i thought that when the new e-class came out like 3/4 years ago, that the 208 would evolve into the current coupe form of the e-class...
i mean basing the new clk on the c class almost seems like a downgrade from the prestige of the 208 (considering the front headlights/body and its similarities to the e-class... a higher level of luxury).
for me its the headlights of the 209 which makes all the difference... if they would have put the current e-class headlights on the current body of the 209... I think that car would have been out of control
when looking into gettin a car - i played with the idea of buyin a 209 and retrofitting the e-class headlights....
its weird cause just thinkin about it - its only the headlights which completely turn me off.

What you do see when driving the 208 is a hoop of precious wood underneath the windshield. The hoop recalls top end Benzes of yesteryear. No such effect in the 209, just a plastic dash.

Like a woman slipping towards middle age, the 208 now has to put the accent on charm and sophistication rather than sheer performance. Think Bentley, not Porsche.

The 209 already had a superior chassis. The 63 gives it a better motor. But I still prefer my 208 55 AMG. The 208 stands out. The 209 even with supercar guts melts into the blur of too many MB products. It leaves me lukewarm, and seven speeds and steering wheel paddles ain't going to help.

For years after the W209 was released I've been crying these exact words here on these boards.
When I first went looking for a benz after college I was interested in the 1999 SLK. Nice little car...but something just arrived at the dealership....a 1999 CLK430 (in black). The second I laid eyes on that car in person it was love at first sight. the test drive soon after clinched it. I knew I had to have one. So I ended up leasing one for four years. I loved the way it looked like an E class but in coupe form. After my lease was up I saw pics of the new W209 CLK and needless to say I was very dissapointed. I had wished mercedes would've stayed with the whole E class coupe theme. But alas they didn't. What a wasted opportunity on Mercedes' part in my opinion. The new W211 had just come out....what a perfect time for a coupe! Don't get me wrong....I like my W209....I just wish they kept it more like the E class.
Only one other car has affected me the way the W208 did that one day.....thats the CLS55!!!!!

I agree the CLS is the best looking Merc to hit the street since the 208. And since MB targeted Jaguar with this car they made sure that it had a classy interior as well, with plenty of wood trim. And it's nice having serious meat on the wheels and that kompressor ....

But if your're tall, the back seat of a CLS is no more comfortable than a 208. Considering the difference in overall length and weight, that's disappointing.

IMHO the best-designed "four dour coupe" was the Alfa 156. The car came out about the same time as the 208 and was a big success in Europe. Too bad it never reached the US.

I agree that the older body is a bit nicer, but in my opinion, overall, the newer body is much more practicle. I love the older body, in my opinion it is more manly and it is sturdy and sexy. But the new one is also sexy, especially when a hot girl is behind the wheel, especially an obsedian black on black 06, hehhee. Anyway, overall the older body is nice, but above 30k, I would much rather buy the newer body with lower models, and it is a much newer car.
