Steering Noise

Clicking near left front tire. Engine off, steering wheel lock off, move steering wheel left to right and right to left 10 degrees repeatedly. Anyone with a CLK have this noise?

MB says this is typically, even has a TSB.

Comments please.

So even when the car is off it makes the noise? Odd. Why are you turning the wheel when the car is off?

Egress/ Ingress. I have grabbed the steering wheel to help. That's how I found the noise.

At the road wheel/ rim it feels like a loose tie rod end. Even with the engine on one can feel something moving/ loose by grabbing the tire rim while the steering wheel is moved, but not hear anything. Engine off one can hear it.

Based on responses; no forum co-member's CLK make this noise or no co-member has noticed this noise.

I guess I will drop the front lower fairing/ splash guard and take a look. The TSB refereed to the rack and the mechanic (car on MB warranty) said he drop the fairing too, yet did not find anything loose. We will see.

As to the TSB, not listed on it is a steering rack adjustment (lock nut and pin) which can tighten the steering. In my case, MB compared my mileage at 16K w/ two other CLK's (7K and 100K) and both made the noise with the same degree of looseness felt in the road wheel rim, if (if) I am to believe they did sample two other CLKs. Hence my post to gather a sample pool. I could agree it is premature to tighten the rack.

Thanks for reading.

KENNY94945,
Would it be possible to send me details of the TSB you referred to in your posts of 13th and 14th August? Would be much obliged.

Interesting. I have a 2002 CLK55 with 37k miles, and noticed an odd clunk when making slow left turns over bumpy pavement. No noise present when going straight or when turning on smooth pavement. Will be interested to hear what you find out.

On a W208, the steering gear bolts are supposed to be tightened every 4 years or 50K miles, whichever comes first. Is it possible your bolts are loose?
