Attention CLK63 Cab Owners (Please Help)

Hey guys! A couple weeks ago I totaled my beloved CLK550 Coupe in the snow. Since then I have been on the search for another one or 2011 e550 coupe but then started thinking about picking up an 07 CLK63 Cab. I do have a few concerns though. Im just not sure about the handling/feel compared to the 550 along with the feel of the power because of the extra weight. Have any of you driven both? I don't mind giving up handling by any means to have them amg power Im just wondering how much I will have to give up. Honestly any insight you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

BTW Do 07 CLk63's blimp the downshifts?

Critter 03-11-2014 01:37 PM

They built 143 of the 07 CLK63 CAB, never drove a 550 and do not wish to, the 63 is definitely not a slouch, but I am sure the 55 guys will pipe in.
First find one, then enjoy :)

Jim's500E 03-12-2014 07:00 AM

The M156 is a pretty compact (aluminum) motor...you prolly will say wow, this CLK63 Cab handles fantastic and I love the extra power..... so I doubt you will be giving up much of anything, but perhaps gas mileage.

Join the dark side. :y

They 'built' more than 143 for the 2007 model year btw, that's just the number for North America.

Sorry to hear of your accident, I hope everyone was OK. One word of caution...CLK63 Cabs are prolly not good in the snow either !!

Critter 03-12-2014 10:57 AM

One factor that comes out with the limited production is the insurance rate charged, it is actually cheaper than an E because the insurance company uses stats like how many are out there and what is the chance of getting into an accident. Wifes' car full coverage 850 per year here in Canada, her Tiburon is 968, the winter beater with the same coverage, the E goes for 1129. There was one for sale in Toronto last year, but they are hard to come by, not like a C or E, 63 of course.
Just what is the total production for the CLK63 CAB?
143 for North America
??? for the World
Mb states only the 143? for 07
Less for 08
Jim is correct on the winter driving, our cars sit out the brutal winters we have here in Canada, yesterday was +10C, today, 20mm snow and -4C

Jim's500E 03-14-2014 11:11 AM

As for the numbers produced...the 143 might even be just for USA. I would guess that Canada got less cars than we did. Like USA got about 860 RS6s for 2003, Canada got something like 92.

Supposedly only 100 for 2008....again not sure if that is USA only or all of North America.

AMG must have made more CLK63 Cabs for the rest of the world, prolly not a bunch like thousands but more than 143 for 07' and 100 for 08' I 'll wager. It would be cool to know the total production unit numbers. :y

Lets not forget these are AMG cars not Mercedes run of the mill, so numbers are dictated by sales, remember 2008, not the best year for car production and sales. for a high end, high powered convertible 4 seater.
When you did the research on the RS6 was the number found 982 or was it separate?
Besides we live on this side of the pond and any car brought into the country having originated in another country would not really increase the value unless it was maybe a right hand drive, now that would be a find in North America. So in that case the number would rise by 1 to 144 or 101. Still far less than the 500 cars that used to be made to be a street vehicle, like the Dodge Super Bird in the 70"s. Bottom line is that 1 they are hard to find and 2 very hard to separate the car from the owner :)

Jim's500E 03-14-2014 12:55 PM

That list you posted is for USA cars...the AMG PL frowns upon copying their posted info and posting on another forum btw.

I can't agree with folks not separating from these cars...there are a bunch of them for sale all over the world. They aren't hard to find either...Autotrader always has a dozen or so for sale.

Def rare cars no matter what the true number is, in the grand scheme of mass-produced vehicles of these days.

Jim's500E 03-14-2014 01:04 PM

Quick search shows the W209 CLK63 Cabriolets were produced from April 2006 to well into 2009 for the other than USA markets...

Here is a press photo of one for the UK market:

Those posted numbers came from a MB world post, I could have typed all the info number by number but decided to cut and paste the info to ensure it being correct as posted, if it is illegal well!
Cannot find corresponding numbers for these cars in Canada, but geographically the numbers should be far less than the 143 that the US got. Or the AMG consortium consider it the North American Market as the numbers posted.
Also lets consider it is a seven year old relic which some consider timely to sell. For some a 3 year old car is old, ha ha

Critter 03-14-2014 01:33 PM

Your site sent me to look at a 850I BMW from 91?

Critter 03-14-2014 01:46 PM

You are correct Jim found 5- 07s for sale across Canada including one in Quebec, 3 black, one gray and 1 white. 30 - 45 K

Ah but let's not forget there is only 4 in Canada as Quebec is wanting to be its own country (except of course for passport, currency, fully open borders...and keeping the federal funding n the future but forgiving past debt owed).

Sorry as a former west coast proud Canadian I could not resist!!

Critter 03-14-2014 09:18 PM

At least you are on the west coast, how do you think we feel living so much closer. ha ha

lkfoster 03-15-2014 07:33 PM

Have you checked into early 6.3 engine head bolt issues? From what I understand the fix is a bit pricey on motors before the design change.

ecampbell 03-15-2014 10:42 PM

I am using head studs so no issue for me.

goatfarmer1970 03-16-2014 09:22 PM

Same question. Do these cars suffer from the head bolt issues of C63 cars...seems logical that they would?

ecampbell 03-16-2014 09:28 PM

It is not the car, it is the m156 (6.2 litre) engine.

goatfarmer1970 03-16-2014 10:28 PM

Thank you and yes, I agree but do the date ranges of the head bolt problems apply to the engine in these cars? I am guessing they do, but the numbers are so much smaller and the convertibles generally get driven softer (at least in my lame world) so maybe it has not been as big of a deal over here as on the C63 board (where guys are posting quarter-mile times)? Thanks.

To be honest I gave no idea. My CLK is over 1,000 HP so head studs are pretty much a given. My suggestion would be if you have any doubts, tar place them as cheap insurance.

JAA-CLK63AMG 03-30-2014 07:26 PM

Battery is dead...does anyone have a photo location of the battery for the clk63amg cabriolet so I can jump start it...been in the trunk trying to find it and cannot locate it. Thanks for any assistance.

JAA-CLK63AMG 03-30-2014 07:27 PM

I meant "cabriolet". sorry for typo.

Critter 03-30-2014 08:03 PM

Battery is located on the passenger side up near the firewall inside of the engine compartment. There are a few clips to flip and then the cabin filter housing comes off, the battery is under this plastic housing. If you just need to jump the car use the red plastic cover(+) plus terminal near the strut housing passenger side and then ground to one of the bolts nearby.

JAA-CLK63AMG 03-30-2014 09:05 PM

Thanks Critter!!! I thought there were two batteries for the clk63 cabriolet...at least that is what I have been told.
