CLK63 Cam Adjusters faillure?
Well, after 4 days of my car in the shop, they finally found the problem and said I need to have the cam adjusters replaced. To my shock, it will cost $5,345 ( not including the $780 for just taking the whole engine out and inspecting it) He said parts will costs $3300, but after looking around, it seems to be $800 - $900, so not sure what parts he is talking about.
How the did this come to be? I was driving all day no problems and got home smooth ride and everything. Next day, just start engine and the whole car shakes like it is about to collapsed and check engine light comes out. Just so weird and just sad. Looks like a common problem with Mercedes after looking online including some recall on some models. Is there a recall on CLK, or not? Well, this is my final draw. Going to sell this CLK63 now, because I can't afford that fix. :( Just 3 months on having it. Love this car so much, so really sucks to let it go. |
Oil pump, pressure regulator, Spent main bearings, Paper oil filter debris throughout the engine. Oil pump drive gears, tensioner or chain failure. cloged pickup screen hmmmm!!!

He may be quoting you for 4 x cam shafts too.

Get it to a bad part of town, remove the plates, report the car stolen...:D

That's sad and costly too. Is it possible to ask him for a break down of the parts he has quoted so you can see whats costing what. You could alternatively supply some of the parts yourself by shopping around for them. Maybe he is adding his own price on top of the parts which I hope not and he is charging you for new camshafts as the member above mentioned.
Don't be disheartened too quickly. A CLK63 isn't easy to come by but then again we don't know where you from. If there are plenty of them, try and cut your losses whilst you still can otherwise check the W204 C63 forum and see who can help you with the adjusters. Plenty guys have replaced these on their M156 motors and can probably point you in the right direction, or someone trustworthy may have a good set lying around which you can buy. |

I'm sure he is making (good) money on MB list priced parts...yes, you can do better on your own there but the shop won't warranty the work prolly with customer supplied parts, maybe they will (?) |
What did you end up doing? As a general rule I would make sure everything is inspected before parts are ordered. It may take a lot longer but well worth it as often not everything on the bulletin requires replacement. Learnt this the hard way with my transmission rebuild. I would only replace the cams if there are signs of wear.
If you do go ahead with the work then replace the head bolts too. Also as others said, check the C63 forums as a lot of those guys DIY this job. There are a couple of excellent threads hidden in the W211 E55/E63 forum and CLS63 forum too. |
