2002 clk tiptronic/sport mode
I have a situation with the sport manual mode where if I’m going 20 mph or more and downshift it makes a metallic sound (loud clicking). It only happens on the downshifting. If I stat in 1 and shift up, no issues. If I don’t use sport mode, no issues.
any ideas?

I do not believe there is such a sport mode on the 02 CLK 55. We have a winter mode which starts the shift cycle in 2nd gear. Very handy in traffic jambs.
Summer mode is normal driving.
Clicking or harsh clunking could be the transmission. the clutches and steel plates interlock in drum and will wear grooves in their shell.
After years of hammering wear slots are formed in the case. once the hydraulic pressure overcomes the slot it slams causing the sound.
I hear it on down shift occasionally while sport driving. Oh Well
Cheers, Gator

That was an electronic failure from one of the solenoids or conductor plate.
other problems contribute to the fore mentioned failures.
Fluid leakage from the transmission interface connection wicks up into the TCU and reaks havoc.
have it inspected for the leak prior to servicing or flushing contaminated fluid.

Thanks so much! I just started driving it and it’s already much better. Should servicing the transmission and take care of any leak take care of this noise?
