2016 or 2017 CLS?

There are still a few 2016s (both 400 and 550) out here that I could live with but of course, I would rather order a 2017 to my spec. I know they are essentially the same car but price wise, how much of a discount would one get on a 2016 over a 2017? I saw one youtube video where the salesperson was discounting a 2016 400 that listed at 80,000 for 68,000. That seems pretty good. Should that be about the discount to expect for a 2016 model?

i work at a dealer in Hawaii and maybe since we are one of 2 dealers in the islands we would never discount the car that much. If there is a $12000 discount i would jump on that > I just priced myself a 2016 CLS400 and at my cost it was 10k off and that was behind reserve and hold back meaning the deal was loosing money but thats what they do for employee prices.. Lease this car for 3 years and take the big discount and custom order your next one. (just my 2 cents. Best of Luck!)

Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was too good to be true. Here is the link to the youtube video I saw where the car was listed at about twelve thousand dollars under sticker:

They are discounting the 2016 car and I understand there are good lease deals. If I got this car at say ten thousand under list, what is a good lease consist of? I really don't know much about leasing and have never done it before. Thanks again. Note the title caption shows this is a 2017 model but the sales rep says it is 2016.

CLS400s are getting discounted because they are being discontinued. For 2017 there is only the CLS550. Also, CLS550s will probably see decent discounts through 2017 since its the last year. One other big plus with the 2017 is they get the new 9-speed transmission and the semi-autonomous Distronic is available.

The CLS400 is pretty weak. The V6 is a decent engine, but just does not have the umph of the 4.7l V8.

The big worry is that the 2018 CLS (if there is one) will likely NOT have a V-8 version. It will probably have the current V6 or the new I6 coming out soon.

That is part of the reason I just put in an order for 2017 CLS550 over the E43. MB is slowly eradicating the V8s from all their models except the AMG and the big S and GLS class. After driving a new E300 and a C450 (which will have a very similar engine to the E43) I decided to stick with the CLS. The E300 is super smooth and quiet, but its too soft.

Can I ask what you got off list price? Was it a buy or lease? I'm wondering what to offer if I find one I like or order.

I got 2K over invoice, which is okay. Not great, but not awful. 1-2K over invoice is a very fair deal for any car.

I have not taken delivery so I don't know what the lease will be like.

If you order, just agree on a sale price with the dealer. You cannot negotiate the lease or finance terms until the car arrives and the dealer knows the current residuals, money factor, etc.

This does mean you are taking a risk that when the car shows up, the lease rates or residuals could be awful that month. The CLS is in its final year, and my experience has been that MB has very attractive lease and finance rates for models when they are in their final year.

That is great info - thanks! You are right, that is a good deal on most cars. This being the end of the month and also the quarter, they might be willing to even do a little more.

Well, I went in to try to make my deal. It failed. I was looking at the CLS550 with a sticker of $85,185. They would only come down around $3000. I did not think that was nearly enough. I'm searching elsewhere but these cars really are too high priced if that is the normal discount. Now I might have to find out what some good lease figures might be.

slightly off topic but, is thr CLS really in its final year?

ive heard the shooting break is being discontinued, and ive heard the CLS400 is being discontinued. but does anyone have an article or any other materials that say the entire line of CLS is discontinued?

The CLS isn't being discontinued entirely. But the current body style and engine are in their final year. The 2018 CLS will be based on the new E-class W213 and will probably be renamed to CLE.

It is also unlikely to have the V8 anymore, except for the AMG version. It may get the new I6 engine that is in development. Otherwise it will likely have the 3.0 l V6 in the E43 and such.

Yes the shooting break is discontinued, and there will be no CLS400 for 2017. Just the CLS550 and CLS63.

E43 vs 550CLS

the E43 V6 is a ripoff. At base 72,000 purely a price gouging ploy to steal money from those who would have gotten an E350 or E400

That 90 degree V6 has terrible vibrations, harmonics, and sound. A vestige from the Daimler Chrysler days when Mercedes was trying to save money. Basically a V8 with two cylinders chopped off. The Toyota/Lexus V6 has a proper 60 degree bank angle and is somewhat smoother although pretty vanilla. How many people gush about the sound coming out of a Toyota or Lexus V6?

That's too bad because it is a fantastic engine IMO. We own a 2013 CLS550 and a 2014 E550 Coupe and while they aren't exactly gas sippers they are capable of mid 20s mpg on long trips which isn't bad for a car making over 400hp. The CLS550 is one of the best road trip cars I've ever driven. I wish we had two of them quite frankly.

I've had my 2017 CLS550 for a week now and it is a real ball to drive. Beautiful to boot! I just can't see buying a luxury sedan with anything less than a six cylinder with a four being totally unacceptable no matter how refined it might be.

The deal was more than I thought but I can't complain because I got what I wanted and it was right there on the showroom floor - the right color, interior, everthing. The only thing was it had that parking assist thing called Parktronic, I think, which I would not have ordered as I have not parallel parked in over 20 years living out here in the sticks. My 2012 ML350 was mint and low mileage and brought a decent trade which helped me.

The thing is I went to over half a dozen dealers in the Dallas area (via internet and a couple in person), which is 130 miles from me, and also Shreveport. LA, which is a tad closer. All of them, even those that had one or two in stock, were not discounting much. My understanding is that Mercedes is giving them a 6% margin on these 550s and that is it. I don't know if that is true but that is what I was told. So, no, I did not get what I wanted but I did not care. After driving the CLS and E class I knew I would never be happy with the four cylinder and when you don't lease and are in the area of $75,000-$90,000 automobiles you darn well better not compromise on a single thing, the motor least of all.

I'm 68 years old and wanted to experience a little "spirited" driving with that twin turbo V8 for a few more years. When the warranty runs out in 2020 and I am in my 70s, those days will be over and I will be ready for "slow and smooth" - but damn it, not quite yet!!

Shortspark, congrats on the car. It is beautiful. Glad you got it exactly the way you wanted it. Are you a member on AGO by any chance? I thought I saw pics of your car up there. Thanks.

Ntwillie1, I am a member of a bunch of car forums so it is likely you may have seen my posts and pictures elsewhere (however, I do not know what AGO stands for). Yes, the CLS550 continues to be just what I wanted in a car and I can't seem not to drive it fast all the time! I need to invest in a good radar detector or get a ticket fund going. I almost always have it in sports mode which makes it an entirely different car than when it is in normal. This car is worth the premium over the admittedly more modern E class which was also high on my list.

Congrats the car looks gorgeous. I'll be in the market for the 2018 body style I've been patiently waiting for. Hopefully they will offer the v8 engine and also a panoramic roof this time around.

I am not sure what the 2018 CLS will look like but I hope they do not change the exterior too much. The design is iconic in that it created an entire new category of vehicle - the "four door coupe". Every other manufacturer has copied it in one form or another yet none have surpassed it in looks. The CLS remains one of the most beautiful cars on the road today.

Mercedes does however need to update the interior to bring it up to this year's E class level, but the sheet metal should not be tampered with too much. With all the classes starting to look alike the CLS has retained its individuality and is far more rare and exclusive than the E class. It has also retained its spirit, unlike the E class which is currently only available in four cylinder. With engine displacements going lower all the time, I would not be surprised to see the CLS 278 V8 being retired, except for AMG versions of course. Lets hope the CLS is the exception.
