Tire size on 19 rims
Hi All,
My CLS550 came with factory 19 inch staggered setup - front 255/35/19, rear 285/30/19.
I would like to get 255/40/19 and 285/35/19, will it fit? It's an inch taller than factory setup.
Thank you.

No, with the OE 19" wheel, you tire will not be able to clear the suspension in the front. The rear is o.k.. You will need to use spacer to space it out in the front. That's a lot of other people try it already. However, you still have other options in the front depends on what kind of result you want to achieve.

I ran a 275/35/20 on my fronts and in sport height and I did get a bit of rubbing on the wheel liner when the steering was maxed out to either the right or left. This was on a 20"x9" rim. What's the width of the OE 19" rim? I guessing 8.5" at most. If in doubt just talk to you local tire shop and they will let you know if it will work.

The offset plays a big role in the front. You need to know the size and offset of the wheel to start thinking about what size of spacer to use. Do you have a 8.5 or 9" wheel? Stock 8.5 has ET 34.5. Do you use this wheel?

I'm extremely, extremely skeptical on any claim of 275/35-20 (27.6"!!!) upfront regardless of wheel's width and offset. 255/35-20 is the highest (27") one can use without rubbing on 9" wide wheel with offset of et20-et25. There's no room over 27" upfront. I suppose 275/30-20 maybe can fit with a "perfect offset", but not 275/35-20.

IMHO, it can only work on AMG (maybe his is 63) version because its front fenders are at least 10mm wider so one can push out wheel/tire enough without sticking out too much while clearing the suspension. To clear suspension on non-AMG CLS, tire must stick out by at lest 1/2". Of course AMG is lower than our CLS, so how he cleared fender with 27.6" high and almost 11" wide tire is beyond me. Currently I'm running 245/35-20 on 8.5" et18 or 245/35-20 on 9" et20. There's very, very little room left so 255/35 might fit, but 275/35? Not on my '14 car.
285/30-20 rear on 10" et25 to et30 is no issues whatsoever.

1. You will need 15mm spacers upfront to push front tires from rubber boots, however you may have problems with fender which depends a tire brand you choose.
2. More importantly, by increasing sidewall by 1/2" (by staying with the same diameter wheels) you will make your car "float": noticeable degradation in handling. Consider increasing cold PSI to low-mid 40s to help with potholes.

The only drawback is that if it doesn't fit I am responsible for the cost of dismounts/mounts...

If you are not planning to lower the car, 13-15mm will clear the boot. However, you still need to roll the fender in order to clear the outside. Increase the air to 40 psi is one of the way to gain a little more protection. You can also squeeze a 265/35/19 in the front and increase the air to 40 psi to gain even more protection. Using 265 on a 8.5 rim is marginal and some tire manufacturer doesn't recommend this set up but IMO still safe to use. However, with the offset you have now (35mm in the front), you still need a 5mm spacer, or those 10mm spacer with a grease cap in order to clear the boot. If you change to 265/35/19. You will not have problem with the outer fender lip with this set up. Don't use something between 6-9mm spacer. just for safety concern.

Drag radials, 2012 CLS63 2012
Does anyone know if a 285/35/19 MT drag radial will fit on the stock 19” wheel. It’s about 1.2” taller. Thanks!
The tire I want to use is the Mickey Thompson Street ET SS
26.9 OD
stock is 25.8 OD
11.3 sect. Width
tread width is 10.5

Thanks for the reply, I am leaving the fronts the same as stock, the rears will for the drag strip only (basically) just wasn't sure if they would rub at 285/35/19. Like your car also!

Are you lowered? Any rubbing? Whats the rim widths and offsets? I'm thinking I'll do this instead of the 255/30/20 and 305/25/20 setup for better ride quality. Thank you!
