Squeaky suspension
I am new to the forum and thought I would share the issue with you.
Symptom - Front of car sounding like a squeaky mattress over small bumps whilst steering is in a straight line, also whilst turning from lock to lock when stationary and at low speed.
Diagnosis – dry ball joints (hard to tell which one)!
Option – replace both ball joints or introduce lubrication to ball joints.
Solution – As no play was evident in the ball joints I decided to try and introduce lubrication into the joint with minimal disturbance of the rubber cover.
Method – With front of car jacked up and supported remove wheel:- Use pin to pierce rubber cover on suspected ball joint. Sharpen end of WD40 spray tube. Gently push tube (lubricated) into pin hole. Connect tube to can of WaxOil. Fill joint with WaxOil and remove tube. Massage rubber cover to work WaxOil in and around joint and to remove excess back out of pin hole. Wipe access WaxOil from outside of ball joint cover. Replace wheel and lower to ground. Text drive.
The effect was immediate on the offending ball joint. Clearly this is not recommended on a worn joint, which should always be replaced. With such a small pin hole, hopefully no moisture will penetrate to deteriorate the joint. With the only other option being replacing the joint anyway, it may be worth trying this method on an un-worn joint.
I will keep you posted on how the joint performs over the coming months/years/MoTs – Cheers.
