Drivetrain failure

Took the car out for a cruise after work last night. About 10 minutes into the drive I noticed when the car shifted it was chattering and progressively getting worse. I exited the highway as the car came to a stop the noise got louder. A combination of thumping and grinding. Car barely moved off the road to the shoulder. I suspect the drive shaft came apart. It’s at the dealer now I’ll update when I hear what happened. Car had 7000 miles when I got it.

It's a 2018 GTR. No recall campaign on those. But warranty for sure.

Question: did you buy it "new" from a dealership with 7,000 miles on it? Or, was it titled to another owner before you?

It was titled new to a previous owner. Why do you ask? Thanks

If it was first titled with a few thousand miles, it was first “used” by the agency. One owner7k miles. Sounds good.

Dealer called with first update. They are unable to find any trouble codes and the car drove fine, no indication of mechanical issues. They will take it out for a longer test drive and report back. This is hard to believe, nothing about it was subtle when it happened while I was driving it. I'll report more when I hear anything.

I have had the same error on my GTS, no codes, usually after the rain. Research seems to affect other cars with the similar diff and motor and appears to be either a software update, a plug in the diff, the speed gear and in one case a new diff was needed.

Dealer was able to get the car to malfunction or act up today. They have no idea what is going on and are at a loss to explain and said they are getting MB in Germany involved. Will post again when I know more. They did say prior test drives were done in comfort and today it was in sport plus when the failure occurred.

I would go to a new dealer - it doesn’t sound like they know what they are doing. They’ve made no progress since you left it there.

So they are making some progress.

It’s important for you to know that the dealer hooks your car up to their diagnostic database in Germany. All known issues for your car model worldwide are documented there using a protocol the local AMG tech specialist has to follow. If the issue isn’t known and shortly after working with the Germany tech specialist, they will send a regional tech to work with the local one and the factory to attempt to further identify the root cause and solution. YOU DON’T NEED TO DO ANYTHING but be patient. As the country boys say, you are plowing fresh snow here. But it will be easier for the next occurrence since everything is documented thanks to you.

Best regards

Jerry

Actually to me, sounds like they know EXACTLY what they are doing following procedures set forth by MB.

Not at all. They’ve done nothing but wonder what the issue is. My AMG tech would be a lot more proactive and knowledgeable- this is not acceptable- but anyway, let’s see what the issue is.

Talked to the dealer today. They have updated software and have not had another incident since. They are keeping the car for a few days to road test to ensure the problem has cleared. The tech that’s working on it was not in so I was unable to get more specific information. I will find out what the update was when it’s done. I’m concerned with accelerated wear as the event was extremely harsh given the noise and vibration.

Picked up the car today. Per the dealer: Installed a newer version of ECM and TCM software, that is it. If I didn't have a couple years of warranty left I would be highly concerned about longevity. I expect to be tracking the car in April so any issues I expect will be revealed then.

Glad they got it figured out, I'll probably be doing the same soon.

Glad your issue is resolved.

BTW:Your copy of the service ticket will have detailed information on what was done, parts replaced, diagnostic codes detected and hours spent.

Now its time to enjoy your car.

Appears the software update did not do the trick. I've put about 1500 miles on the car since the incident. Today when I came to a stop after about 30 minutes of driving the shudder returned. Its almost like the clutch is engaging and disengaging, the car noticeably rocks back and forth but not in reverse. Give it some gas and go and it seems ok although the shifting seems a little off and firmer. I decided to drive it back to the barn and I heard a metallic bang or ping from the rear and at the next stop light the problem was gone. I'm going to send it to the dealer as soon as I hear back from them as they are on COVID hours. Once again, I will update as I hear whats going on. Everything I've read about these transmissions is pretty solid of late.
