Fun at the 1/4 Mile

It was hot...100F but still pretty fun taking it down the 1/4mile. The best run I could pull off was 11.9/ 120MPH, but the heat and tires in the right spot would shave about a half second. Launch isn't their strong suit but once these things grab, they really like to move.

Hmm, I was able to achieve 11.7 on regular street with Firestone tires... 11.9 is very bad considering yours is a GTC and on a proper drag strip. (I drive a 16' GTS stock)

Turbo cars get killed by the heat, especially if you were idling in the lanes for a long time.

Car and Driver trapped 128mph in their GTC testing.

Buy a Dragy and try it again when the DA is below 1500. I bet you get 125mph at least.

yeah, I could feel the heat getting to it for sure - thanks for the advice! First trip to the 1/4 mile - I'm more of a road course guy for sure. Still fun though!

Our cars do not like heat and are not the best from a dig either. Still fun. Best I managed tuned was low 11s in the heat. Still fun to do and glad you got out there.

To be honest, I am disappointed in the gts from a launch. For a CAD 170k+ car, it doesn't launch half as hard as a base 911

That's front engine vs rear engine for you. Nothing to do with price or the quality of the car. A Ferrari 812 or F12 is no better in launch traction than the AMG GT, and a C7 Corvette launches worse with equal tires. Rear engine puts more weight on the rear, allowing much better traction when accelerating for a RWD car, and more balanced front:rear brake balance when stopping (as weight shifts forward). Nevertheless, the AMG GT is above average for front engine RWD traction thanks to its transaxle layout.

I hit the drag here in NC last weekend. Was able to pull a 11.4. That was in Sport+. Couldn't get the tires to hook in Race. Hoping to do some work and get in to the high 10's.

But the amg gt has very similar weight distribution to the 718 (47/53 for gts) vs (45/55 for 718). From real world testing (I used to own a 718 cayman s), the 718 and gts has very similar 0-100 times, both around 4 seconds, while the gts has a lot more power and costs a lot more. This is of course using the same tires, tested at the same location with very similar DA, data recorded by Dragy.

At low speeds, both the 718 and AMG GT are traction limited, so they achieve similar acceleration with similar weight distribution and tires, regardless of engine power. The 718 GTS PDK weight distribution is 44:56 front:rear, so it's also a bit better off than the AMG GT family. It's only at higher speeds where you're not traction limited where power makes any difference. If anything, extra power hurts at low speeds by causing more wheel slip.

Put 350 pounds in the trunk area and try it again if you want traction like a

Is the Roadster the same? the specs look like 47/53 which is still impressive with a soft top - first one I have driven that has no compromise.

Just took my car to a truck weigh station with myself (90 kg) plus half tank of gas. Front axle is 840 kg and rear axle is 930 kg. I can say the weight distribution is on point.

Took my GTR (not the PRO) to the drag strip when I first got it. Did 11.5 @130, I think DA was over 3000 that day.

Launching the car is pretty rough. Has a lot of torque management to deal with and wheel hop.
Awful 60' times, but I was not going to beat up the car to shave a few tenths off.

What performance set up are you running, meaning down pipes, etc?

No Downpipes, just a RENNtech tune and secondary cat delete. Most of the problem was grab and air temp - no one was getting down the track as expected, except for the Trackhawks - they were dominating.

Yeah those trackhawks can fly down the 1/4 mile quick. We have the fastest TH in the world where I live. I am hoping for this pandemic to disapear to take my car to the 1/4 and 1/2 mile to see how it performs. Hopefully a high 10s
