I said that a few times but the new SL absolutely competes with the 992 TT (not TTS).

There is this myth that all Porsche 911 buyers are performance cars enthusiasts; lots of buyers will never leverage what these cars can do and a lot of them only see slow city driving.

A look around in our neighborhood and friends confirms that. They cross-shop by price and not performance…

But of course, the 992 is more capable and although heavier than ever before still is 500lbs lighter than the SL.

Yep, tan top is the exact problem. I talked to them about this same car, and they were not willing to replace the top before delivery, even if you paid for the top. You could replace it afterwards, but it's very expensive (over $10K). The price is awesome, but it looks horrible.

Such a weird color combination - I don't think the mileage is doing it any favors either. Its not high for a mercedes but it is for a GT. They take a pretty big hit once they go much over 12K-15 miles

For me the bigger problem is the interior color which doesn't match the color of the top. (The carpet and the drapes don't match.) With the top down you can see the tan top and the black interior leather.

Back in 1998 I bought an SL500 which had constant problems with the fuel gauge. It turned out something in the fuel tank measuring the gasoline level was deteriorating with one of the chemicals put into the gas by one of the oil companies. After the third attempt to fix the problem, with no positive results, I told Mercedes I wanted to sell it back the car under the California Lemon Law. The car had a smoke silver paint job and a black top. I thought the car would look better with a tan top, but I was about to sell it back to Mercedes.

Mercedes then told me its engineers had figured out how to fix the fuel tank issue and begged me to give it one more try. I told Mercedes I would if it changed the top to a tan one. Mercedes agreed. The fuel issue was fixed and I got a new tan top. Which I thought looked terrific. I didn't think the silver color of the car currently under discussion is dark enough to look really terrific, but I still like the look. The black top is so blah. (My Jupiter red GT has a black top. I don't think the tan top would work on it and the red top is the wrong color. But I don't like the black top that much.)

(Epilogue: The work installing the new top wasn't great and it had gaps. I complained and Mercedes changed the top one more time. I really liked the look. I kept the car until I bought a 2002 CL 55 AMG coupe. One of the partners in my law firm bought the SL from me, and he really liked the color combo too.)

The car in this link looks exactly like mine after the new top was installed: https://thembmarket.com/1999-mercedes-benz-sl500-5

Not for nothing, but dying that to black would be an option too - and not a $10K option either.

I spoke to one of the salemen via phone, & he told me it was a wrap, "according to the customer who sold it to them". That would seem to make sense with the top selection, with Iridium Silver & black interior with red trim. Would love to know what the original color was & why the wrap.

Hey guys,

I don't see a wrap here. Not on the body color. Take a look at this pic off the dealer's site. All of the door inside components including door hinges are body color. A wrap would be leaving these areas the original factory color as it is impossible to wrap items like door hinges. As strange as it sounds, it appears this car came looking like this from the factory? The only other explanation is the top was changed from the original color (maybe black which would make more sense), but there is no record in the Carfax report the top was changed, at least through a dealer.

A clear wrap still is a wrap.

Which begs the question as to why the salesman would text me, that it was a wrap. I thought that was a little odd, so I asked for confirmation, & was told the previous owner, said it was a wrap. Odd that this was said to me, if not the case.

The VIN indicates Iridium Silver which is what you see on pics. It does state color code (IRIDIUM SILVER SHAPE)982U which would indicate Magno. Then paint protection like Xpel Stealth would be what they mean by wrap.
That would also indicate an additional bonus for paint protection...

743 SOFT TOP FABRIC BEIGE-TONAL BEIGE (8Q23) - the top was always beige.
CCB's, engine cover in CF and High-end Burmester. I don't dislike the soft top that much. Am sure this was some stupid dealer spec. instead of a custom order. Personally I think this is a kick-*** deal. List price on that car would have been $185k

The only oddity: No CF center vent cover? The console has CF along with the door trim. Normally that vent cover should be too.

A very badass car. If I were in the market and the beige top helped me get a better price I'd like it even more.

I was interested in the roadster, but was immediately turned off by the "wrap" comment with no explanation, & given the black seats with with red striping. I think they should have explained what they meant by wrap, but that's water under the bridge at this point. With the "Silver CF" there is no CF on the vents (an MB thing?), but on the center counsel & door panels only.

Never seen that version of CF - it looks like a wrap to me given the option for CF interior isn't there.

AMG GT C Roadster
Well, I bought one yesterday (traded in my McLaren 570S which I was daily driving for 3 years). 2019 GT C with less than 3000 miles and CPOd, and interior/exterior color choices that I would have picked if I ordered it new. The only thing else I would have liked is CCBs, which this car didn't have. Love it so far! This will also be my daily. Feels and smells like a new car.

Hi,

This GTC has a strange composition. The brown soft top, but brown leather interior (code 564) and carbon it would be a nice car.

The glas fiber doesn't fit here optically. Never thought it was nice. At that time, it cost about 1670 USD, but not cover the air vent. (Carbone with air vent cover about $1900)

This trim level could be ordered until the first quarter 2019. After that, this option was dropped without replacement.
Was only available in combination with silver and not with night package, code: PAK.

These were the glass fiber codes:

H84
Center console (always without center air vents panel)

735
2 trim strips door armrests (approx. $775, same as carbone)
(always same code, equally to H84 / H73 / H77)

6U2
Strut behind seats (about $1430, same as carbone)

Best regards

Stenzel

Beautiful car. I usually don't like the Merc whites that much, but this looks great. Ditto the interior which is the perfect complement for the exterior.

2022 AMG SL63
I had a 2018 GTC which I just traded in for a new SL63. Just sharing some of my thoughts (and justifications):

First, I LOVED my GTC. It just looks right. Great lines, more power than you will ever need. I had the Burmester upgrade and was never disappointed, even with the top down. The car attracted all the attention most of us crave when we purchase these cars. And definitely unique.

So why opt-out? After 3 years the daily driving aspect started to grind on me. Every speed bump, pot hole, slight incline pulling into a parking lot, groaning to as a swung my 6'1 frame into/out of the car contributed to a feeling that I wanted something more comfortable. The performance seats weren't cutting it on long drives anymore and the lack of driver assist packages had me longing for my two previous SLs. Also, as approaching end-of-warranty stuff, I just started to question the car as a daily driver, and if I wanted to be on the hook for things that would start to fail (an LED on the airscarf indicator had gone out. Minor, but indicative of things to come?).

If you can get one, DO. You will not be dissapointed. There are times I miss it, but so far I'm very happy with the SL63. Also, be very thorough with a pre-buy. I had two repairs (hit a deer carcass and had to have a new bumper but on and some quarter panel damage that was repaired from someone who changed lanes a bit too soon). Apparently neither have generated a CarFax finding. Neither incident impaired the vehicle beyond cosmetic repair, but I also would want to know and get a better deal than some GTCs I'm seeing claiming Excellent Condition.
