Well, that is AMG kinda in a nutshell. The cars are all based on the same architecture and powertrain, just different power levels, size and weight. A lot of parts are shared between them.

And this is just what AMG said at the beginning....that they (the AMG SL63 and the hardtop GT) were basically to be the same car underneath with some different externals and features - most obviously a soft top versus a hardtop.

If in the end, the GT is just a hard top SL with some new body panels, it will be a huge failure but we won’t see until someone actually gets to drive one.
It doesn’t help that it weighs so much, has rear seats and lost the transaxle layout but AMG knows the performance targets the car needs to meet on the road even if it is more GT then it used to be.

That is what AMG said - and often - in the early planning. There were videos of it at the time (a few years ago) - some of which I posted quite a while ago on the AMG SL63 forum - but of course you are right that doesn't mean they will drive exactly the same or be "skinned" the same. I had a GTS for 3 years and a GTC for 3 years. I can tell you that the SL63 exits corners faster on my favorite freeway transition skidpad. But what one likes or appreciates is always quite personal. Especially body panels and the looks.

I absolutely have driven multiple GTs all the way up to the GT BS, so very familiar with the car. You are just focusing on suspension comfort. A road car goes beyond that. There's the long, low nose which reduces visibility and ground clearance for daily hazards. PFL models of the GT didn't even have a front camera. I'm not saying you can't do long distance driving with a GT, but I've done 12 hours driving in single days, and that becomes much easier with Active Steering Assist in addition to DISTRONIC so the monotone highway cruising is more bearable. It's about the complete package and not just a single aspect that makes a good long distance road car.
I did buy the Roadster because again you can't replicate the feeling of the open air without it. I didn't have top down due to excessive heat. Better temps outside would have made it more enjoyable with it down. I mostly use my GTC as a daily driver for short runs (2 hours of less) and works well. I am not much of a track guy but would like to take it sometime. I was just brought up to baby my vehicles so pushing it hard (like at the AMG Driving Academy) makes me uncomfortable. Plus you can go through a set of brakes and tires in one day if you run it hard. Good 3-5k day at the track . Main reason I like my GTC is its unique and fun to drive. Definite sacrifice on those other items.

I've watched quite of few of the driving reviews and I must say, it's been a long time since I've seen such unanimous praise from reviewers. Probably since the last GT & E63s. As a SL owner, it gives some nice added perspective. Driving the SL, I thought AMG would have a hard time making the GT right. Not that the SL sucks, more that it's very focused in it's mission of being an all-around pleaser. Happy to see they seem to have figured out the winning formula. The design is bomb in and out, the driving is amazing, the car is fast, the emotion is even higher than the SL and it comes with comfort and perks.
I assume the discussion will quickly go from "This is just an SL with a hardtop" to "This is just the base GT" as we anticipate follow up models.
My personal hope and wish is that AMG nails the hybrid as well as they've nailed this one. If you remember, they specified that this chassis uses some modular-something-something tech to make it ready and effectively a hybrid drivetrain. Hopefully this means a low weight gain. If they can make it happen with +200lbs, that would be amazing. This, plus the learnings they've made from the somewhat sloppy GT63e 4DR and S63e could mean we have the potential for a proper hybrid step up that would deliver and uncompromised, modern & electrified performance driving experience. I had little to no hope they would, but now I do. We may see a proper poor man's SF90/Revuelto from Mercedes.
We all know the sun is setting for these big engine performance cars, but at least it seems AMG is going out with a bang.

Will the GT63 S coupe most likely make an appearance in 2025? GT63 4-door coupe is 577 hp and the GT63 S 4-door coupe is 630 hp. Might be best to wait a year and get some wrinkles ironed out and some more HP. I'm definitely interested. Still don't like the giant ipad but can't do anything about it. I find it interesting how the car sounds so good when I thought they were having to "quiet" things down. My GLE 63 and C63 are muted. It sucks.
