looking at a 87 300td wagon
 
lookikng at getting a 87 300td wagon,its in good shape but lots of miles on it,what should i look for and what kind kind of prices for parts where to look.

Take it to a Mercedes dealer for a pre-purchase inspection. This model should have had lots of warranty work performed as regards trap oxidizer.

Typical for 1987-vintage it will need transmission work, HVAC system work, could have windshield wiper problem, etc. Nice to have records whether this stuff is already done.

Kent, is the trap oxidizer the same as the catalytic converter? If so there is no need to do anything more than an "amputation" of this auto part and replacement with a straight pipe.

I agree with your assessment of the HVAC system. Troublesome and expensive. Same with my 1986 W126. The 4 speed transmission was fine though if serviced according to MB recommendations. Full service record is vital with any high mileage MB.

It's not the same thing.

The Service Campaign doc is titled

MODELS WITH DIESEL ENGINES EQUIPPED WITH TRAP OXIDIZERS REPLACEMENT OF THE TRAP OXIDIZER WITH AN OXIDATION CATALYST
