Just purchased a 2005 E320 CDI

Hey all,

Newbie here. Just purchased my first Mecedes. It's a 1-owner in Desert Silver/Stone leather seating with the entertainment, sunroof and power rear-window blinds packages. It has 48,542 miles and there's not a scratch on it. I also purchased an extra 3 year/100,000 mile extended warranty. After 10-12 mpg city driving with my Landrover and now getting 25+ mpg city is quite a treat. The engine has tons of torque and is much quieter than I expected from a diesel. I have high hopes for this vehicle and plan on keeping it for 8-10 years.

Kind regards...
Tom

Congrats to you, it's a great car.

Your color--same as I have on my GL--is called "Travertine Beige" in the rest of the word. "Desert Silver" is the name for Americans.

Thanks...

Heh, I said to the seller I liked the 'goldish' color and he was quick to correct me that it's called desert silver.

Is there anything about this in-line 6 diesel I should know about? With the limited research I was able to do before making the purchase, there wasn't much negative press I could find about them.

During January I purchased a 2006 with 48,000 on it. The first thing that I had done was a flush of the transmission, power steering, and brake fluids. This was a loaner car and had complete records. I am getting 35+ mpg on the highway. Not bad for this size car.
Good luck!

Biggest thing to know about the engine is that it has an aluminum cylinder head and removing glow plugs or injectors can be problematic.

Your 2005 has likely had at least two years of use with pre-ULSD diesel fuel, meaning there could be some clogging of the EGR valve.

I have all the service records and the Carfax. All service work was done at the local dealership here in town.

The glow plug was replaced at 25373 and again at 40909. The rest is regular maintenence except for a temperature sensor evaporator at 9417 and a steering column tube module replacement at 7055.

The service work done at 48542 includes:

Replace SBC Battery
Replace front rotors and pads
Recalibrate SBC brake system with brake repair/replacements
Replace rear rotors and pads
Perform brake system fluid flush
Perform software updates and adaptation
Check electrical charging system and replace battery
Replace cracked windshield with rain sensor
Replace AC filters and wipers
Replace engine air filters
Replace transmission filter and fluid
Certified preowned inspection
1 seal ring, VL
1 TS filter in
9 qt mobil 1 esp
UCPP Preowned Perma-Plate
Replace key and blade

The vehicle is in pristine condition inside and out.

How would I know if the EGR valve is clogged up? The engine is running perfectly.
