When MBUSA is hesitating diesel imports after VW case, I would research European delivery. Maybe they allow diesels this way, maybe not, but I think ED is great program for new MB regardless.

I don't think European Delivery makes any difference in terms of the availability of an E220d in the US. Any car sold in the US must meet Federal Safety regulations and EPA or California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards. If Daimler Benz intends to import the 2017 or 2018 E220d, then they will need to certify it with these agencies. Then there will be a US spec model of that particular car available for sale in the US. Getting it to the US is another issue, either picked up from your dealer or at the factory in Germany through the European Delivery program.

You seem to be implying that DB will sell one an E220d that isn't available at dealers in the US, so one would have to do ED, and that this car would meet US safety and emissions standards. I can't believe that is the case. If that car exists, then I can't believe it wouldn't be available from US dealers also.

What I've read is that there will be no 2017 E class diesel. There might be a 2018 E class diesel. DB intends to do some sort of market research to determine if there is still a market in the US for diesels and then make a decision based on that for 2018.

I have been planning on buying a new car sometime in 2017 for a couple of years now and really wanted a diesel. Then the VW diesel scandal hit and VW Group decided to abandon diesels all together. I thought, surely there will be a Mercedes diesel, they've been importing them into the US forever. But I'm starting to really have my doubts that this is going to happen. From what I've read BMW isn't offering a diesel engine in the new 5 series either. There is the Jag XF diesel .

My understanding was that we are unlikely to see many, if any, diesels from Mercedes-Benz in the United States in the near future. They had originally planned to have the 2017s rolling out last year, but that timeframe has come and gone. At this point, I think it is unlikely that we will see them.

We are whining here about things that we simply don't know.
Just becouse MBUSA is not importing diesels - doesn't have to mean they don't meet emission requirements here.
Speculation is not going us far, when 1 call to 1-800-FOR MERC and asking for knowledgeable in ED operator can answer that in couple of minutes.

All we can do is speculate. Mercedes-Benz has not been forthcoming about diesel sales in the United States. Considering how many self-imposed deadlines they have missed, I think it is increasingly likely that we will not see any for the current model year.

Even if you want to get a MB diesel from Mexico/Canada or Europe, you can not import since it will not pass the current EPA specs. Thanks VW. I believe only BWM and Jag are allowed at this point. Maybe "the Donald" can work on the EPA etc and bring them back to reality!!
I passed up the BMWX3 and JagXPace suv diesels. My 2014E250 lease is up and I have a GLC300 (gas) on a ship write now. Doing a 30mt lease and have my fingers crossed that MB will pass the EPA tests. If not I'm not sure if another MB is in the furture. Love my Diesel.

That's my understanding as well. Only BMW and Jaguar have diesels on the US market in the luxury segment.

Europe might not care much about diesels becouse they have propane way cheaper than gasoline and diesel fuel.
In US the propane cost same if not more than diesel, so different incentives.
The deal with ED is that you are legally bringing used car and used cars have to pass different requirements.
Last year I was researching bringing diesel Smart to USA from Canada and it turn possible, although dealing with 3 government agencies at the same time leaves lot communication flaws.
Still I am not a guy spending money on new cars and there is plenty used diesels on USA market already.
