Normal Sound and Smoke?

Have been having exhaust odor issues (both inside and outside cabin) since the AEM was performed. Complained multiple times to dealer to no avail. Last visit they replaced a seal on the turbo and said odor is gone, which it is not.

I decided to investigate myself a bit checking for Black Death, etc and decided to remove the oil cap. Is this noise and smoke normal? Granted, it was about 40 degrees and the truck was running for maybe 2 minutes.

thanks!

What's an AEM?

What seal did they replace?

Is the smoke just steam or blow-by? Did it go away after you checked later after the engine was running longer? Put your palm over the opening for a few seconds - you don't want to see your hand turning black.

The AEM is the exhaust modification Mercedes had to perform.

They replaced the seal between the turbo and exhaust collector pipe (Downpipe). Previously they replaced the charge air hoses (air duct on exhaust gas and air duct upstream from intercooler). Oil cooler seal also replaced around 5,000 miles ago when the engine only had 11,000 miles.

I am not sure if it's steam or blow-by. I will try your hand over opening suggestion. I did check it the next morning at start-up and there was no smoke, but that was just a second after start-up and didn't leave the cap off for more than 10-seconds.

The dealer has been great, but I am getting frustrated waiting for an appointment to only get the truck back with the same issue again. To wash and repeat the same cycle. I've been complaining about exhaust smell in cabin since 2022.

Seen worse what? The engine has about 16,000 miles on it.

Look for escaping exhaust (both from the top and bottom) once it's good and warm. Use a flashlight - it might help. Just be real methodical about it.

Regarding the sound... it's hard to say. I know that there's a similar (normal) sound to be heard - but it sounds more pronounced in your case. However, it could just be the way your mic is picking it up.

What happens around the 5 second mark? The engine sound changes and the leak appears to diminish.

I believe there is more than this though as for the odor is almost constant and is at the point that your clothes smell like diesel exhaust after spending a few minutes in the vehicle.

I held a paper towel above the rubber grommet and this is after about 5-sec. Good/bad? This was after the smoke stopped. Remember, the engine has about 16,000 miles on it.

IMHO that's not normal. The noise sounds like an old school diesel not one of the new ones (that could be your phone however) and that smoke should not be happening. My e250 (different engine) doesn't do that at 110k miles and my ram (different engine) doesn't do that at 182k miles. At 16k miles that engine should be broken in enough but that seems like excessive smoke around the engine on the second video is definitely not normal. Been around many of these and all the ones with emissions intact you aren't going to be smelling diesel exhaust and especially in the cabin area. You may have to reach out to MB and hope they help, the dealer just doesnt want to go back in and fix whatever they did, assuming it didnt do this before the AEM. They dont get paid for fixing there screw ups so they generally dont want to do it.

Seriously on a basically new vehicle with intact emissions you have scene worse and think its normal/ok? Are you a dealer tech or service manager?

Worse blowby. The sound and smoke under your oio cap is unrelated to your smell problem. The mileage is irrelevant. The likely cluprit of the smell is the EGR pipe coming off the exhaust at the back of the engine.

I just looked at my truck. What I forgot about when I mentioned putting your hand on there is that because of the location of the opening, A LOT of oil splashes out. So the question is... how come you didn't have much more on the paper towel?

The smoke looks normal given the conditions you ran the engine at. It doesn't look like blow-by.

Potentially your chain is looser than mine?

I'd be looking for a raw fuel leak onto a hot surface as the source of your exhaust smell, probably somewhere close to the cabin air intake on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
