Renntech E550 ECU Comments Wanted
 

OK, it's been a while since Renntech has announced the release of their E550 ECU upgrade. Wondering what the general opinion might be regarding this. Spring is comming and I'm getting anxious to posssibly give this a try although I don't want to be the first kid on the block. I know there are other suppliers out there but haven't read any comparo's. Might it be prudent to hold off a season and let things develop? This kind of thing happens to me each spring, maybe not enough sunshine or something. But in any case, if you have first hand experience regarding this please let me know. As always it'll be appreciated.

I haven't had any personal experience with Renntech stuff but know of a few that have over here and they rate it very highly so if you can negotiate a good deal with them I'd go for it!

See the PM from RENNtech below re: testing of their ECU tune on the S550/CLS550/E550C. They also sent another message (can't find it at the moment) about mods they're doing to the E550 Coupe: include C63 brakes, additional cooling, and a few other items.

Sorry for the delay in response as I was out of the office for the 24 hours of Daytona last week running a Porsche Cup car in GT class. We ran well but retired just after the 18th hour.
In regards to your question, spoke with Harmut (who frequents the track) as well as looked a a few comparison timeslips on an S 550 4 matic we tuned here and noted the following differences in the time slips. Granted the runs were done on seperate days so weather is a factor, but the S 550 with the tune ran a 0.1 faster 60' time 0.3 quicker in the 1/8th at +2 mph and 0.4 faster inthe quarter mile @ +2.8 mph. Granted these numbers would be differnt on a day to day and vehicle to vehicle basis- however we estimate the CLS 550 to be 0.4 faster 0-60 mph with the E maybe doing the same if not an additional 1/2 to full tenth.
We currently have an E550 coupe here that we are planning on collecting some data on and will try to obtain before and after 0-60 mph times on a v-box perhaps prior to friday or the end of the week (subject to change though). I hope this gives yo some information and I will update you once I am able to collect a hard data from potential runs on this E550 coupe.

What I like about RENNtech is they test, document, test, mod, test, etc. They might be more expensive, but I can see why.

Sorry, I don't know much about the CLK550's performance numbers; thus, can't compare.
What does the CLK550 weigh and what are its power numbers?
Also, what are it's documented 0-60 and quarter mile numbers?

I know the '12E550C is lighter than a '12CLS550:
These are the test numbers from a Motor Trend test of a '12CLS550:

I may have read this wrong. Is the e550c the new one with the twin turbo motor or the 2011 one with the m273(n/a 5.5L v8)

If it is about the one with the m273, the clk550 has the same motor,tranny etc but weighs 3720 compared to the e550c that weight 3780

This is about the 2012 E550C with the M278 bi-turbo engine.

It's all a bit confusing as the published stock E550 HP/Torque numbers seem to differ depending on the source. MB is saying just over 400 HP while other quoted dyno numbers are at 460 HP or so. Also same motor and output from CLS. Not sure why there is such a big disparity.

I believe part of the answer is that MBZ uses a different (euro) measuring-standard than SAE. in addition it depends on the dyno that is used. Mustang dyno's adjust for estimated road drag and others do not.
Also, MBZ tends to underrate their engines from what I've read.
What's important is to use the same standard before and after mods, which is what RENNtech does according to what I've read.

They need to make headers, downpipes, exhausts, and intake for the e550.

I believe their focus is now on the bi-turbo engines. There are multiple upgrades available for both new bt engines.

Limited-Slip Differential would be my first priority.

I'm picking up my e550 this upcoming week and I want to upgrade the ecu asap and I am looking closely at the renntech ecu upgrade which seems to be the best bang for my buck considering daily driver reliability and power, however it has a substantial price tag on it. I was wondering if anyone knows a vendor or anyone that might be able to help me with a discount on the upgrade. If there is any way possible to get the price down that anyone knows of that would be a great help!!!! THANK YOU!! any other easy upgrades that are relatively inexpensive that anyone could recommend would be great
