Mercedes E Class Coupe 2009
Hi guys i was wondering wether anyone can help me. I Have a mercedes e class coupe 2009 and i swapped the steering wheel over from the old shame to a new shape 2013 amg model. whilst moving it over.. the steering angle sensor was exposed and i may have spun it around abit to get the cables to fit through. now whenever i start the car i have an esp warning, and when i drive over 40mph my steering is off set. help guys i messed up. is this a simple putting the sensor back into its place or a new sensor needed?
please let me know thanks guys!

Firstly, thanks to the OP for this write up, it was a great help! I took a few pics during my install to assist anyone who needs to change over the "chip". I was lucky in that I have a 2012 (produced in late 2011) so the contact plate in my stock wheel was the same shape and size as the one from the 2013 c63 wheel it was replaced with. Please find a few pics below:
Quick pic of the " inner workings" of the airbag bracket. I just used a small screwdriver to push the spring back, bag pops out relatively easily.
Four screws need to be removed, all T20 torx.
Remove the plugs from the contact plate and remove it from the wheel. From there you can just swap in the new plate, or custom fit the chip from your pre-facelift wheel into the plate. I believe there are a couple write ups on how to do this. Definitely some pics of the finished chip swap earlier in this thread. Reassemble and you're done!

Remember to swap the chip or it may not work? I have the same problem I plugged in and nothing works. So what chip do I need to swap? Thanks
I went from a Late 2009 C250 wheel to a late 2012 as Crazy's

It depends on which wheel you are upgrading from, i upgraded from an early produced 2012 model year, so i already had the facelift wheel, meaning i could swap the whole contact plate (containing the chip) from my old wheel to the new one. If youre upgrading from the three spoke pre facelift wheel to a wheel produced after June 2012 (pretty sure that was the cutoff date) then the chip itself needs to be removed from the old contact plate and retrofitted into the model update contact plate. There are some pics of this late on page 2 of this thread. I think there are some full writeups if u search the w204 forums.

By the looks of it I'd guess that the steering wheel should fit and work properly with no real issues other than the paddles. Is your car a manual 5 spd or auto? Obviously if it's manual the paddles will be useless, but if its auto I'm not sure if the paddles will work the same. I paid about 1000 for mine with airbag, so you may be able to find a better deal than that. They do seem to pop up quite often, not exactly a rare item.
My main concern would be keeping that alcantara in good shape

Only $1K? Wow so cheap, how and where

Really like that new wheel, would like one in my car!! Good DIY guidelines and easy to follow, the only thing I would add is once you disconnect the battery leave the car for 15-20 mins before you touch the air bag module, purely from a safety issue of it going off due to residual current issues!!!!!
Oh ensure the wheels are directly facing straight before you remove the old wheel, even though you marked the location, mute points really !!!

Other option is to upgrade to the FL steering column that is compatible with the june2012+ chips. PN is also in the thread linked above.

I'm about to purchase one exactly like the one I have except this one has paddle shifters I believe it's from W204 C63 AMG. What do I need to do to make them work on mine that didn't come with it? Like I said it's the same as my 3 spoke wheel without the paddle shifters.

My buttons don't work after replacing the Steering Wheel Controller, which is a black box right behind the airbag. I have to program this controller. Does anyone know how I could reprogram this controller?
Thanks

Can you tell me how much this chip is and if I can change it myself, as in i don't need to be doing any major electrical work, I can just make space for it in the new wheel and plug it in? HELP

Hi, I have the same issue. I bought an E350 2009 coupe with the new style wheel already on it only to discover it doesn't work (horn, and all buttons). I have taken the car to a Mercedes specialist who told me there is a communication issue and that the new wheel isn't compatible with the car so I need to buy an old w207 wheel?? w207 means nothing to me so I have tried to research it tonight and have come across this forum and it mentions changing a chip.

Steering wheel swap W164
Hi Chris,
Great Posts, very informative, Thank you.
I want to change/upgrade steering wheel of my 2010,GL CDI - W164, its become old.
There are many nice AMG and other steering wheels available cheaply on the net, but none an exact fit, the last 7 nos match but not the the first 3.
Are there any wheels from other models I could interchange with the OE on the vehicle with some modifications.
How could one go about this, what would be your take on this.
Thank you.
Sorry, this mistakenly has been sent by email as well.
