2014 E550 Coupe oil dipstick
Unless I'm going blind I cannot find the oil dipstick on my September build E550 Coupe. I'm thinking it would be nice to check the oil level periodically especially during the break-in period. The Operators Manual indicates the dipstick is located towards the rear of the engine on the passenger's side. Try as I may I don't think it is there. On the driver's side there is an orange colored knob that seems to be routed to the transmission. Pulling it slightly reveals that it does not appear at all to be an oil dipstick. Am I going blind or has the oil dipstick gone the way of the dinosaurs? I for one would like to find mine if it is there.

I should have also mentioned that I pulled off the plastic cover over the center of the engine thinking the oil dipstick was underneath. It is not. Still searching.

It's that red handle at the back right of the engine as you face it from the front. Don't throw your back out reaching for it.

Yep, that's it. But according to the Operators Manual it is shown on the opposite side of the engine hence my confusion. And instead of a handle mine has an orange colored knob. I incorrectly assumed that it was for checking the transmission fluid. The oil dipstick itself is a very long piece of flexible stranded wire with the gauge at the end. So for others just keep pulling on the knob and eventually it will come out of the tube.

Looks like there might be some year to year and/or model to model variation here. Mine (2014 E550 Coupe 9/13 build) definitely is on the right (driver's side in the US) as I stand in front of the car and as Cavu described. See pics attached. Note the orange knob at the right. It sure has oil on it when pulled completely out. There is a small gauge at the end.

As you can see, the dipstick in my 2013 e350 Cab is on the drivers side (rear engine right) and it is not brightly colored. It's dark gray like everything else in the compartment. I lifted it up in one picture so you can see it more clearly.

Not related to any of this but do you have ambient lighting in your E550? Other owners say they do not, but it says yes in the owners manual and MB customer service said it does.

Thanks for asking. I've been meaning to post something on the series of posts regarding this. As I think I have said my E550 was delivered the beginning of October with a build date of September 2013. I forget the exact build date. But I can tell you that there is NO ambient lighting. Nor is there a sliding cover over the cup holders on the front console. I have yet to receive the questionnaire from MB about my pleasure or otherwise with the car and its delivery but I intend to mention both items. Not sure it will do any good but it will be worth mentioning.

I am really suprised with how inaccurate MB's product info is. I mean, people make buying decision on some of these things being included and their not. I do plan to bring these things to thier attention when I go to germany in a few months to pick up my E550.
