240d won't start
 

I have an 82 240d that was running great. I let a friend borrow and he got stuck with it. Their was some power loss and then died all together. After sitting for a day it started up and he drove it back to me. I took it for a ride myself and as I drove it for abour 5 mins there was some power loss-but I made it back home. Now it will not start. I changed both fuel filters and this did not help(. I am pretty new to diesels but am fairly mechanical. What should I look at first? Are there any known causes to these symptoms?

Remove the fuel tank cap when it won't start and listen for a whooshing sound. If there is a woosh, clean the tank vent in front of the left axle.

If no woosh, reverse the fuel supply and return hose connections and test drive. If that fixes it, drain the tank and clean the strainer.
