New Member saying hi!

Hi guys and gals.

last night I bought me a very nice (i think) 1985 300D from a nice lady in detroit. he's got 173k miles on the clock, and has a really nice interior considering his age.

this is my first diesel, my first benz, and my first older car so any advice would be great also hope you guys like my 300!

whatcha think?

thanks in advance for all the help, i drove the car to work today and it drives like a dream, i'm now the proud owner of a mercedes-benz. hope i got a good deal on the car (i paid $1100)

thanks!

ya there's some rust spots on the bottoms of the side panels, no large holes though. no rust on the roof or above the side molding, so for it's age it's in great shape. i got it pretty cheap so after i get my project car running i'll be willing to fix this guy up cause he's in pretty darn good shape as is. i'll take some interior pics in a minute and add them.

Sounds like you got a good buy. Have you checked the underbody? I had 3 w123s that all ended up with holes where the drivers seat bolts to the car. Other common rust spots are the jack points, around rear windshield and rear quarters. If you have none of these your in good shape. If you do have these addres them before it turns to rot.

Best of luck with it

Under the car you need to check the Rubber Rear Axle Boots for Cracks as the CV Axles are filled with Oil and if a Boot goes the Oil leaks out.

There is at least 2 Rubber Flex Discs on the Drive Shaft. Check them for cracks.

Check your Oil cooler Hoses and the Transmission Cooler hoses for cracks or leakage.

If your Oil Cooler Hoses need changing beware that removing the Oil Cooler Nuts often results in the Aluminum Oil Cooler Nipple getting the threads stripped off of them. (There is a repair for that but there is a way that might avoid the problem.)

The front Suspension also pivots on Rubber. When that rots out you start to get uneve Tire Wear.

If you were to get a big slug of Air in you Fuel System like if you ran out of Fuel and the Air gets between the Fuel Injection Pump and the Injectors; trapped in the Fuel Injection Tubing you will need to loosen the Fuel Injection Tubing Nuts at the Injectors and crank the Engine to bleed the Air out.

When Air gets trapped in that area you might deaden a Battery trying to get it out if you do not loosen the Fuel Injection Tubing Nuts at the Injector because the Air Compresses a lot but moves only a little inside of the Tubing.
