240TD W123
1982 W123 240TD rear knocking

The car has done 75K miles. The diff mount, sway bar mounts, control rods are new. The SLS system is perfect and just overhauled with new spheres. The subframe mounts are new.
When I go over small bumps or just minor road irregularities there is a loud thump from the rear. It is not consistent so some bumps make it happen and some don't. It makes no difference what speed I do or what weight is carried.
I cannot find anything loose under the car and riding inside when it happens seems to indicate it comes mainly from the centre by the diff.
ANY ideas what this can be? I seem to have been working on this replacing parts for years!

thanks

dif support maybe? Get a cheap borescope and hook it up to your dumb phone and mcgiver it so you can look around while someone else drives. Some have audio sensors I have heard tho just video should be enough. Then there are busings to look at. I assume the drive line discs are OK? Muffler and tailpipe?

I'm guessing the center drive shaft bearing or the subframe bushings. Both are easily inspected on a lift. The bearing is an easy job but you should replace the flex joints while you're at it if they are cracked. Sub frame mounts are another story.
