Aftermarket Car Alarms

K guys I'm in the market to upgrade my stock alarm. I was going to have mine installed at BergWerks where they had a special alarm that works with vacum locks but supposedly they closed shop recently.I heard that there might be problems with aftermarket alarms and the auto door lock function working with our vacum locks. Is this true? I was looking at getting an Alpine pager alarm set-up. It came in handy a few times on my last project car. Any tips on what features to look for to make it compatible? Or can I just get any aftermarket alarm?
The feature I'm looking mainly for besides the usual glass, trunk etc protection is automatic door locks and the paging.Nobody pays attention to alarm sirens anymore.
Thanks guys

~Cali

Yeah I'd like an alarm upgrade too but it doesn't seem like the vac locking system is too friendly to most alarms. Right now I have a simple keyless entry that works fine but the alarm goes off if you open the doors after unlocking with the fob lol. If you find anything out outside of this thread Cali, let us all know because I'm sure there are plenty more people curious other than us three.

I put an aftermarket alarm on my car. works with no problems witht he vacuum lock system. you just need relays for the vacuum locks to trigger the system.

I put in a prestige, since I got it at cost like $60.00

And installed it myself since I know how.

I am adding more features to it too, remote start, windows up and down, and some other things I havent yet decided on.

I put a Clifford Intelliguard (slightly old model by now) including remote start on my '87 300E. It worked flawlessly, with two exceptions:

1 - it draws a fair amount, so it will run your battery flat over time if you don't drive the car.

2 - the "auto" arm mode can be really annoying.

The code-entry system is nice, in that if you lose your remote, or the batteries die, you can still disarm the system. There is also a feature for carjacking, which will eventually immobilize the car if you get out while the engine is running, and don't enter a code within 20 minutes or so. I didn't use that feature, but the remote start is great on Winter mornings.

You can install almost any alarm, but you will need two actuators instead of one. An actuator is needed to unlock the car, and second actuator is needed to lock the car. I paid $120 for my alarm, and an extra $15 for the second actuator.

I also had a Clifford Intelliguard installed on my 95 C280, I believe it had the vacum locks.

There weren't any problems except after about 2 weeks, the car would arm and disarm itself in the middle of the night parked in garage. Brought it back and they replaced the brain box. It's been fine for almost 9 years and I sold the car.

If you want a pager alarm, Anything that is a reputable company will be fine.

I myself like prestige made by audiovox, because I like how it works and the wiring for me is easy to wrok with moreso than some other alarms. I am not sure if they offer paging alarms. www.audiovox.com

You can always go with viper, clifford etc, which are all made by DEI. www.directed.com

Or you can probably find a code alarm.

Frankly, I would go with the best that you can afford that has the features you want. I just would not go with a no-name brand.

Look up MAC stereo and car alarms in Walnut/Covina area. They installed alarms and stereos in my previous vehicles.

If there is enough interest, I could do alarm installs on my days off for w124 members, for a good price, but also dependent on features wanting to be installed.

I would have to charge for the relays etc.

As far as larms, I can get code alarm and prestige alarms from my boss' distributor for those products, I would assume he could sell me them at cost since I know him pretty well.

But it would have to be one of those brands, and I would want to do it not going through my work, because then my boss would have a fit thinking I was stealing business etc, and would have a fit if I was buying car alarms and installing them on my own.

I still have to work out some features I want to wire up on a w124 so that I can have it all down pat, my car is my lab rat so to speak.

Where is the other thread?

X03, if you get the alarm, I can install it for a good price for you on my day off.

if you are like me and want to do the install clean and factory looking, it takes at least half a day, then again, I like to wire up everything cleanly and solder all my connections, as well as test and doublecheck all my connections.

ok, I can get codealarm or audiovox from my guy for cost. they usually vary in price at cost from $75.00 and up depending on the model.

And get me a price you guys can find on install from your local shops and I will beat the price.

75 sounds really good Alon.

I'm more interested now. Sadly, I don't know of many shops that install car alarms...especially on mercedes.

Alon, so will this be a group by and a group install too?

Alon,

Thanks again bro. Just let us know the different models and prices and we can
choose from. We can look up the different model features ourselves on their website....
