Grille installation/swap tutorial anyone?

Does anyone have an existing picture or written tutorial on how to replace my old OEM grill in my 1989 300E to a new one I bought. It is just the inner partof the grille and you just use the old frame.

here it is ebay link

I have no idea if this is going to be a hard job or not. I don't really know how to work with the grile. It says it is a DIY job. Thanks guys...

Essentially you have to loosen the two screws at the top right and left of the chrome frame first that connect it to the hood. Then take off the black rubber in the center up top. Loosening those two screws just mentioned allows you to bring the frame just foward enough to access that top middle screw which is connected to the emblem as well. Then there is the screw at the bottom of the grille to undo and the release screw. I had to just jimmy the grille around and pop it out and then back in again. That wasn't an exact science. Now there are a few type of grilles like you have there. I had gone through 2. The one like you see in that ebay link doesn't match the OEM clips and so I am not sure how it fits. To illustrate here is a pic i took of the differences. The bottom one is of a more brittle plastic whereas the top one is kinda flexible. I actually have to sell both because I didn't like the look with my color.

That top one matches oem to a T. The bottom one does not.

yea, the hardest part IMO is putting the grille inset back in the chrome housing...those metal tabs are a pain the *** to snap back in

on that website, it is stated that it will work with cars within the years of 1986 and 1993. But in the pictures, it is demonstrated on a car with a 94/95 hood. i doubt the grills are of the same size. and i think you should. the look of that grill helps make your car look more new. the grill won't look as brittle anymore.

That grill looks like a stock grill painted black and new chrome inserts placed on every horozontal edges (I think the stock only has the strips on 4 horozontal edges). Just do it yourself, the chrome inserts can't be more than $20-40.

Someone either here or another forum did just what I said above and it looked great.

Oh man. You guys are scaring me. I ordered this item thinking it was gonna fit my 89 benz. It is advertised that it will fit but I didn't even notice that the benz was a 93-95 benz in the picture. Hopefully this is not false advertisement by this ebay member. Well anyways, thanks for all of you guys trying to give me help. Keep em coming if there's more!

that may be so but that grill looks like it is made of plastic or sometihng that feels better ( just from visual, i think professor booty got the same item ) as opposed to the original probably grey grill thats on there right now. mine is very brittle by looks and this would look good to replace it with. good luck with your new part

With my grill I plan on painting the entire insert with matte black and then find a hood emblem star and do a little carving and centering it in the grille. Still plan to have the grille rim in chrome oem look. What do you guys think? Seen it done b4?

I recieved my grill from UPS today. The grill looks nice. I want to just put it in, but too bad I don't know how to fully do it. So I have to buy extra clips for it to fit my car? Where an i get em?

Thumbs up

Aright guys, I just followed Zahkunst's instructions and it was done. Thanks man! Only thing you didn't mention was the metal clips holding the grill and also the trunk hatch that was in the way of the grill coming out. I had to remove the latch first, then jam it out...then squeeze the new grill back in..

Oh yeah, there was no opening for the latch to come out of the new grille so I have no more latch for now. I just have to reach deep in there with my fringers to open it. Haha. ALso looks more cleaner without the grey latch sticking out.

looks great, your car looks exactly like mine and want to do the exact same thing, but that grill comes after the euro lights, which comes after the stereo im putting in right now. Oh and what happened to your hood star? looks like its missing something

sure looks like he did. your car nearly looks white in that picture... how dark is that tint? and when taking pictures, try to face away from the sun but this is fine because its just enough to convey the message of the new grill and not show off the car at its max.

Thanks guys! Yea, I tinted my windows. It is 5% in the rear mirrors(back windshield & rear passenger windows) and 36% in the front passenger windows, which is illegal where I live. And no, I didn't paint my bumper, just straight up stock.

Yea, one day I walked to my car after the mall and I noticed my star was missing. Sucks tha someone actually took the time to just take out that star. Whatever, I'll just buy a new one, just lagging on it.
