automatic to 5spd standard
 

my gf just gave me her 190E 1990 2.6 5spd. i really dont like her car but i really like that 5 spd. i was wondering if i could put that in my car which is a 300E 3.2. If i could just get some opnions that would be great

Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it. You know, there they did make the 300E with a 5-speed manual, so that would probably be the easiest swap. I don't know how much the 190E version differs, if at all.

Would it make the car more fun? Probably. Is it worth the cost of the transplant? Personally, I don't think so, but it's your money.

If I were you, I would sell both cars and put it towards a 400E and a 2.82 rear end. That would be the most cost effective route to the performance upgrade you're looking for. 275hp, 295lb/ft, and with the shorter gears, 0-60 in the 6 second range. To get your 300E anywhere near those numbers would almost certainly cost more.

From the info that I found, because I'm looking to do the same swap, is the the 201 and 124 Mercedes shared a lot of the same components in their manual transmission cars. You should be able to take all the pedals and parts leading up to the transmission and bolt them in directly to your car. Not sure how the transmission would work with your car, but I've been told that it will bolt up.

from what i understand (have been considering simialar swap) every thing should bolt to your car(pedals and all that jazz) but the transmision itself. you have the 3.2 M104 motor, and the 190e 5spd was designed for the M103 family of motors. the tanny that will bult straight up is either the unit from europe or from the r129 300sl. they offered one for the first couple years of the r129 and its m104 based motor. (this is from talking to local mb dealer master mechanic)

I converted my w108 to a 4spd when i was in high school, I found a donor car for the pedals and what not, but I tell you that mercedes are the best for doing such conversions as many of their parts work between different models and years. For example, I used the front half of a driveline from a 75 240D that matched my rear half to make the perfect length for the conversion. I have my eye on a 2.3 190E 5spd for all the conversion parts at the local parts yard. Being that the w201 was the test bed for the w124 and that they share a ton of parts, I would think this would be an easy swap. I look forward to it as soon as my TE's tranny fails.

The most imoportant aspect of this conversion is to have the complete donor car to make sure you have all the parts and can visualize how the parts all work and how to compare the differences.

it should bolt up. the long blocks (103 vs 104 are the same)

another thing i was also wondering would be is that i have a 3.2 its puts out about 217 hp would the tranny beable to handle the power difference without burning my engine or the tranny.
