You can replace the individual metal strips for about $60 the lot. If they are the same as the W126, they pull off from the centre outwards, the vertical one downwards; some of the original lugs might break, but the new strips come with replacement lugs. The plastic grille itself is surprisingly cheap at about the same price or less, if I recall correctly. I've picked up two good surrounds off eBay.
