zed's request: valve cover removal

2 Attachment(s)
NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

Remove cover (5) and ignition coils, then cover (7) and (6).
Unscrew bolts (14) and (15) with spacer sleeves (14a) and (15a).
Remove cylinder head cover (1) with gaskets (2) and (2a) and shaft seals (3). NOTE:
Remove grease from sealing groove and, existing reusable gasket (2) so that the gasket (2) adheres better to the cylinder head cover (1).
Do not grease new gasket.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Fasten cylinder head cover (1) to 10 Nm , see bolt diagram (illustration).
Run the engine.
Check for leaks, particularly at rear (arrows) at the gaskets (2a) and in the spark plug recess.

P.S.
Don't forget to purchase new seals(duuh) and the job like that pays about 1.7hrs + actuall head cover painting.... good luck.:)

ksingaway,
once again you proved to be smarter from everybody else.
now it's time for you to get off my thread.:X

maybe i'll just try to paint the small cover (#5 in the first diagram) and work my way up to the whole thing... the engine is one thing i'm always scared to play with - over-torque or strip a bolt, mess up a gasket, etc... much more $ than messing up a headlight retrofit!

GORBETTTEAM Mar 2, 2008 10:06 AM

#5?

very easy. to be honest with you. i've been driving w/o that cover for about 6 months before i reached the results i wanted on my cover. it's about 30 mins job. good luck. :y

GORBETTTEAM Mar 2, 2008 05:38 PM

but from a different seller tho. i'll try to locate the guy if you want me to. let me know. :y

Or you could use a rear mercedes emblem, clip off the little nipples that fit it to the trunk, jb weld it and voila, a 3D MB engine star!

Buy a good set of torque wrenches

Hey Zed,

If you are concerned about over torque just break down and buy a nice set (craftsman) of torque wrenches. Get one for foot lbs (does your main bolts) and one for inch lbs (does the lighter stuff like covers and electrical components, etc). It will give you a heck of alot of confidence and you can also brag about it and feel more manly cause dude they are NICE BIG MANLY TOOLS. Even your lugs should be torqued to spec.

My engine bay looks like yours rbycc (stress on LIKE). Did 93+ look like gorbetts and zeds?

ZedStyle Mar 3, 2008 12:42 AM

yeah, 93+ look like gorbs...
i have a torque wrench, but it's huge, probably need to get a smaller one i guess.
i also need the black plastic cover that goes on the front of the engine, mine is cracked. there was one on ebay a while ago for like 80 bucks, i thought that was a bit excessive
