Tumbler gone?

Just take your bent wire tool, press it in to the holes at about 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock in the opening in the steering lock assembly just as if your were guiding it in from "position 1", and the cover will release.
After all, that's actually how the tumbler is held in, by the ignition lock cover.

Managed to get it earlier yesterday. It seems I was having a problem because when the tumbler is in, it pushes the release down easy, but without it in, I had to bend the wire more and get it at a strange angle. Phew!!

Oh no I think I may have just messed up big time....
I got my lock cover and I couldn't tell which way the right orientation was, so without the tumbler in, I pushed it up against the lock cylinder and it seems to have "clicked" in place and won't come out.
Have I just screwed this up or can I release the lock cover without the tumbler in?
