So does the E55 AMG and other AMG models. Is this vehicle rare, or a collectible?

AMG Hammer 02-11-2003 11:17 AM

Yes, so do the others; but, the Hammer was the first to do this and gave AMG the respect it has today. You'd have to know the history of the "Hammer" to fully understand. This was in 1987 and a 4 door Mercedes was faster or just-as-fast as the tuner Porsches and Ferraris, it was a big deal in those days.

Hard-core W124 lovers know the Hammer and the precedent that it set...

FInality 02-11-2003 01:15 PM

Are those gear ratios right? They seem short to say the least.

ZorroAMG 02-11-2003 06:09 PM

Amen to that AMG Hammer, by far the most known AMG vehicles with benz aficionados!

Unbelieveable perfromance even by today's standards. And by the way the E55 and other AMG models are limited to 155 MPH here in north america and the hammer was not, so NO the E55 and other AMG models are not as fast.

Fantastic Benz...

Do you actually have one?

Yes, the gear ratios posted are correct. Nope, don't own one (I wish), just a HUGE fan of the Hammer. AMG called it "Varooom with a view".

I happened to have found an old AMG newsletter in my basement from the late 80's - it had a nice article on the Hammer. I have collected some nice photos from around the web - they are kind of hard to find but I've gathered a decent collection that I'll post up soon.

I'll post up a couple in this thread.

Here's the first:

Look forward to any pics or info you can supply and sincerely appreciate these. I have the 1987 Sales book from AMG but have a crappy scanner. The pic in my first post of this topic is from the book.

92RennTech 02-19-2003 12:38 PM

The Hammer is very close performance-wise to my RENNtech 6.0 litre conversion (402 hp, 410 tq). Cosmetic-wise not even close! Does anyone know if the guy who started RENNtech is the same guy who developed the Hammer? I know he came from AMG...

AMG Hammer 02-19-2003 01:29 PM

AMG is Hans-Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher, and the last is for Aufrecht's birth town of Grossaspach. Aufrecht created and owns AMG with Melcher doing tuner work to the engine on a contract basis, he designed the heads/cams. The top AMG tech (for the Hammer conversions) in the USA was Hartmut Feyhl.

RENNtech is owned and operated by Hartmut Feyhl, so I guess that explains the similarities.

no way those gears are right...3rd gear (if thats right) is lower then my 1st....4/1 ratio is low...let alone 8/1

AMG Hammer 02-23-2003 09:00 AM

Well you do make a point. Those numbers are from a "Road & Track" magazine, so they could be wrong.

Thats what I figured... You would at least need a 1:1 ratio to get those kind of speeds. I would imagine an O/D ratio of something like 0.82 for the fourth gear.

Okay, I found the mistake. The final drive listed by Road & Track, with these gears, is 2.24:1 ratio and there is a mention of a 2.47:1 also available. Sorry for the confustion.

omegabenz6 06-28-2003 05:13 AM

for some reason my old account omegabenz isnt worting. I made a new one so I could write to you here.

2.47:1 is for the american market when they brought the Red Hammer over here.

2:24:1 was to achieve the 186 mph top speed.

I have a lot of old magazines with the different hammer car featured within the magazines.

Enclosed is a piece from a small AMG leaflet of the time, this is the version they marketed and some people called the Hammer.
In another brochure they gave the options of 5.6 360hp, 6.0 385hp and 6.0 cat with 350hp which I guess was the US version.
As far as I remember from the time, (I might be wrong), it was a W201 with a 5.0 340hp built as a showcar that first got the nickname "the Hammer", which later was used for all W124:s, coupés and sedans, with AMG V8:s.
I have a lot of facts and figures, pictures and prices and if something special should be of a more common interest I can scan it in and put it here later.
