Stereo - no sound from right speakers

Stereo - no sound from right speakers
Hello all,
Hoping someone here can save me some troubleshooting time: The right-side speakers don't usually work in my 1995 E320 SE. Maybe 2% of the time, they "cut in" and work for a few mins, but then they go silent again. There seems to be no particular thing that causes them to start/stop working. When they don't work, they're silent--no buzzing or anything.
Perhaps a loose wire? Any other suggestions before I start disassembling panels?

Wrong stereo!
Thanks for the suggestion, but mine has the new-style stereo. There's no knob for the fader; all of the controls are part of the head unit. FWIW, the problem is with left-right balance, not front-rear.

Thanks for the advice! I just realized that the problem exists only in the right-front speakers (both the dash speaker and the door speaker). The right-rear speaker (on the parcel shelf) works consistently. If this changes your opinion of the problem, I'd be grateful for other suggestions....
