I like the Eibachs, but you do lose some of that comfort. I have been wondering about using OEM springs with Bilstein HD shocks, big swaybars, and the smallest 1-bump pads. The car would be flat in the corners using the big bars and rebound would be well controlled using the Bilsteins. My car would be about 0.5 inches lower using the smallest spring pads and I suppose the car would be "comfortable" for highway cruising using the OEM springs. Perhaps this would be the best set-up for our cars.
They have always said that the real beauty of the E class cars is the balance of performance and comfort. As soon as you modify the car, you risk losing that highly valued balance our cars are known for. Actually you lose a lot just by changing to the bigger wheels and lower profile tires. It is difficult to make a perfect car, but Mercedes usually gets closer than most other manufacturers. Then we just have to change it to try to make it even "better". I’m not sure it is any better, but it sure is fun to play with it and learn how each change affects performance. The mod bug is hard to resist and it does breathe new life into a car when you have been driving it for many years. My car feels brand new since I made the changes. I will be happy for a while. I wonder what will be next?
My experience with the eibachs: You do not loose a lot of ride comfort. The springs are fairly soft, and they shine when corning at 40-50 mph and your tires dont screech. I dont drive very fast haha. The only difference I noticed is when hitting potholes or rail road. Your car makes a little noise but its performance sounds hehe so its all good. When I say it makes noise I mean you can tell the difference in stiffness from the OEM springs and shocks to the New set up. But on the freeway I get a pretty smooth ride unless I hit some part of the freeway that needs to be rebuilt then I'm in trouble, well not really but all that noise kind of scares me so I simply change lanes no big deal.
