I am thinking of buying one but dont know much about the car..
it has 105k miles, but is in mint condition, except for a squeak in the engine..around the fan.... but the guy said he just had the belt changed..... could it be the belt isnt tight enought? not sure what it is.......

Can anyone help?

Also, what is a fair price for the car? the guy is asking 9k...

is he the original owner?

does he have all receipts for what he has done to car?

was it serviced at the m.b.dealer?

do all the panels match up good?

condition of paint?

condition of wheels [not tires], road rash?

color combo?

do you have heated seats and headlight wipers?

do YOU like it?

have you checked edmunds.com and also kelly blue book? average those figures, it should give you an idea.

HAS THE WIRING HARNESS BEEN REPLACED???
this is expensive if you have to do it.

these are awesome cars and buying a good one used is an excellent deal.

no he is the 2nd owner. Bought the car in chicago
Carfax shows clean car...

yes he has all receipts for the car.. he said he replaced the wiring harness, oxygen sensor, etc

No, the car was serviced at an independant garage in queens, NY

All the panels match up good... no accident history

The paint is in mint condition...amazing for a 9 yr old car

Whells are in great condition

White / light grey interior.. the leather looks brand new...

no heated seats but yes headlight wipers

The car was very nice.... but it needs a wheel alignment after driving it, and prob brakes and rotors too as the wheel would shake when braking hard. and the engine fan ( i think the fan) was making a screaching noise... he said he just replaced the belt too.... GOing to have my mechanic look at it tomorrow...... the trade in value is around 6500 for this car in good shape...but i think this car is better than good...

The guy told me he just replaced the wiring harness on the car.....Not sure what it is....he said he has the papers for it

Thanks for all your comments peter!

my car is white/blue.

good maintence history is imparitive on these cars.

if the owner has been faithful to keep it right, your extra/unexpected costs should be minimal.

not trying tp pry into your business, how much is this guy wanting for it?

they're great cars, i love mine! you have about 217 hp and i have 177.

they are some of the last hand built cars by m.b.

plan on doing a few things to it...

sportline suspension [part or whole]
16" wheels

if you're happy with the numbers and they work for you, why not go for it?

The belt will screech if there's not enough tension on it. It is a rather embarrassing noise. It may need a new tensioner.

I don't have a feel for the price, but the car sounds like a good buy. The new wiring harness ($650) is an asset.

Other known problems:

(Major) Head gasket. After time it is prone to leak at the right rear corner. It leaks oil to the outside.

(Minor) Upper timing cover seal. Oil leaks from the front of the engine.

(Minor) OVP. The original OVP - PN 000-540-52-45 ("Made in Austria") - is prone to problems. The updated OVP has PN 000-540-67-45.

Don't let these problems deter you from purchasing an otherwise fine car. This info is just to keep you informed of what to expect from this car.

Yes, mine is a 95 E320 Cab. I just spent the winter replacing the head gasket and wiring harness on my June 2002 purchase. I wasn't having problems with these issues - just wanted to head them off before they become a problem, since these are known defects.

Mine had the later style wiring harness which was more expensive ($725). About 2-4 hours to install.

Head gasket is about $70 plus another $70 if you replace all the upper end gaskets with this job. Considering the miles on what you're looking at, you'd be prudent to throw in a complete head reconditioning should the time come - perhaps another $400.

I did this all myself. These cars are complicated and difficult to work on. I think the dealer charges $900 to replace the engine wiring harness and $1800 to replace the head gasket.

Look at the A/C!

The A/C should be working fine, otherwise it will cost you!

It's interesting, because I also have a '94 E320. I had to replace 3 OVPs in the 3 years. Finally, I figured out what kills them. Directly above it there is a seem where 2 pieces of the plastic "gutter" meet. The water drips right onto the OVP and eventually fries it. So, 2.5 years ago I put some chewing gum in that joint (the first thing I had avavilable) and it stopped the problem.

Replaced the head gasket and valve stem seals recently at 98K miles, because those little oil leaks were driving me nuts. Luckily, I was able to do the gasket job by myself.

What wiring harness are you, guys talking about? What happens to it?

Arnie, we're talking about the engine wiring harness. The bulkhead connects to a box behind the battery and feeds to all the components on the engine. The insulation turns brittle long before its time and looks like it's 200 years old. The insulation flakes off and the bare wires make contact setting off error codes and a host of driveability problems. Check the insulation on yours. It's a known problem for the 93-95 models. It must have been replaced at one time. They rarely survive a head gasket change from all the manhandling.
