Power and potential of a 260e ???
Hello! I am new around here and looking at a 1989 260E. Does anyone have any info or links to good info on these cars. problems, maintenance issues, recalls, available mods, power, specs, etc?
I searched Yahoo and came up empty and then remembered this site when I came here for my father-in-law's old '95 E320.

260E , 1989 (for now)
I have been driving my 1989 260E for 11 years. Do I qualify to give your some info?.
The 260E is basically identical to a 300E, less some standard equipments and a smaller engine. 158HP, 0-60 in 9.1, top speed 132mph. MPG= high 20's
Common problems: like all W124,: Oil consumption at around 100K: Valve guide wear. Cure= replace.
Some are reporting oil leaks at the front of the engine (timing chain cover) and leaky head gasket.
A/C system: either the heater/A/C control, and sometimes the dreaded evaporator ($$$)
With carefullk maintenance, these cars will go around the planet 10 times before showing some signs of fatigue.
Mine has been very reliable over the years, has required only normal maintenance (except valve guides) and still runs solid at 260K

I forgot: Performance improvement: Don,t think about it unless you are ready to invest serious $$$. Stay away for the highly advertized easy gain items (Air intake, K&N filters and the like.) it will be a total waste of money.
