Car Stalling Frequently

Car Stalling Frequently

The dealership recently replaced the spark plugs and fuel injectors.

The car has a new OVP.

It seems to stall when coming to a stop, or making a turn going slowly or while decellerating and turning. The problem is slowly getting worse. The engine idles at 550RPM while idle in "D" and when the car does stall, the engine seems to all of a sudden give up. Sometimes it recovers and the engine will surge to about 1k rpm, but usually now it just dies.

After the repairs at the dealership, the car worked fine, no stalling, but now about two months later, the problem has returned.

I, and I think most people with this problem, don't have the resources to keep replacing parts. Anyone out there no what this is? Any help would be appreciated. I am taking this car to the dealership, and they aren't exactly focused on saving me money.

Thanks!!!

There seem to have been many question re. stalling lately. The idle control valve is a culprit for your problem. And 550 RPM is too low. Should be 700 plus or minus 50 RPM at operating temp (at least 80 deg C).

Any indie MB shops in your area?

Mine has that problem, well almost. It will stall if revved up in neutral and then letting of the gas. The engine doesn't seem to catch the idle or something. I also does this when first started up in first gear, but as soon as it goes into second no worries, the transmission doesn't let the engine speed drop to quickly.

Wow guys, you seemed to have hit the nail on the head. My car did have that problem of high revving in neutral, letting go of the gas, and stalling before, I haven't tested it soon.

And it does seem to be the case that as long as I let the car slow down slowy, it is ok. I noticed if I drive around in first, the car will surge sometimes, trying to recover from an almost stall.

It sounds like that Idle Control Valve is gone. I'm going to confirm this at the dealership on Monday.

Thanks so much for your help guys!

i had the same problem with my car, but it was only when it was "cold" when i just first start the car....

first the dealer swaped out the engine electrical harness, then i still had that problem, then i changed the throttle actuator, that seemed to fix the problem....

what hurt me the most was the over 4k bill......thats why im keeping my w124 forever!!!!

The dealership wasn't even really sure what it was. They think that the ICV may be it.

In 6 months or so I'll be selling my 300E, and I will replace the ICV before I sell it. I don't want to sell a car that stalls frequently.

Do you know how much it would be to install (labor only - I have a place to get the part for $170)?

Thanks again!

Change the fuel filter. This might solve the problem

Do you have a hard time starting the car? Have you ever checked the fuel line coming out of the fuel filter that goes to the feed line for the fuel distributor. This is one line that rusts and tends to leak and cause fuel problems(low fuel pressure, air in fuel system). An O2 sensor most likely wouldn't cause this problem since even if it completly died it would just make your car run rich and might not even set off a code on a OBD 1. It might be the ICV or something else. I have a used one but a good one if you want to buy it for cheap, but you should run some tests first.

Well, my car starts just fine and super fast. I replaced the alternator, belt tensioner and belt and ever since then, the car has never stalled.

I'm set, but good luck to you other guys.

Hey,

I think my car has the same problem 93 300E w/93k Miles... when you start it and it's cold... it idles really loopy and once warmed up it'll idle around 550 and belch out black smoke and will stall out and just keeps doing it... Any Suggestions?

valT.

Black smoke could be oil consumption, although oil usually has blue smoke.

Black smoke usually means to much fuel (running rich).
Check simple things under the hood like disconnected vacuum lines or broken ones and check the arrow on the MAF to make sure its pointing in the right direction.
Do you smell fuel?

Chupper, try cleaning the throttle body bore. With use, the bore gets a buildup of carbon around the butterfly valve which messes up the idle. To clean, remove the throttle body and clean the bore and butterfly valve using carb cleaner (or throttle body cleaning spray) and a toothbrush. You'll have to work at it...the stuff is hard to get off. When clean, you should see an even gap of air around the butterfly valve. Disconnect the battery for a minute afterwards, to force the computer to relearn the new idle parameters with the clean throttle body.
