Custom fiberglass subwoofer enclosure W124 coupe

Just thought I would share since I have not seen any write ups on this ever. Maybe inspire some to also do it.

I like to cruise around with all the windows down and the sunroof open, the problem is that in order to do so the sound system really has to pack a punch to overcome the wind noise and sound leakage.

I recently installed Rainbow dash speakers, they are wonderful, they make so much more sound than stock, so I have the highs and mids covered. On to the bass.

I decided I need to compliment the mids and highs with some heavy duty boom.

I sourced a wonderful like-new Kenwood KAC-9152D mono bass amp with wired remote and high and low level inputs. I already had a new 12" Infinity Kappa subwoofer from another never finished project. Now I just had to figure things out and get to work.

Ill let the pictures do the talking. Lots of work and modifications and adjustments along the way, not done, and lots to go, and its been pretty expensive even for DIY. This is also my first time doing this so I'm learning as I go.

What you are trying to do would not only improve the sound quality but also sound-proofing from the tires, etc. However, would soft material rather than fibre glass be better in handling acoustics?

That looks so friggin good. Where did you put the amp? My only concern is the volume of the enclosure being enough for that big of a woofer

Thank you. I did not measure the volume but this sub is made specifically for small enclosures as small as .45cuft, optimal is .93. So I know I ma surely somewhere there.

Amp was mounted under the hat tray.

Its an 1800w mono amp with remote.

Yes, I tapped into low level signal and the remote that goes to factory amps. Power wire of course goes to battery via an additional Mercedes OEM rear battery cable and through the factory cable conduits and grommets. No holes were made anywhere, can all be returned to 100% stock. I modified rca cables by cutting off the ends and connecting them to the wire taps.

no in NY, USA.

Made an addition to deal with the power draw. Again no holes were made to the car anywhere, everything mounts using factory holes. 2 Farad digital capacitor.

How does it sound? Any interest in pulling it and making a mold?

Nah man, would be too much work....like essentially making another one. If I was hoping to make these to sell then yes. But I dont see too many people wanting one so it would not be worth my effort. I have a whole twin turbo system I still have to install.

Its time consuming and very messy, and the materials do add up. but its fairly easy to do. Give it a try.
