1994 E320 Wagon rear suspension

Hi, all.

Anyone familiar with the self-leveling rear suspension on the E320 wagon of my vintage ( 1994 )?

How does this system work?

What typically goes wrong with it if anything does?

Is there a way to convert it to a standard shock setup?

Has anyone ever replaced the hydropneumatic shocks?

My car has 112k miles and seems sort of floaty. I would like to replace front and rear shocks, and am curious as to what the lifespan of OEM shocks is, and what is advisable for me to do to upgrade my stock components.

Thanks for any feedback.

Most common fault is corrosion of the steel hydraulic tubes carrying the fluid from the reservoir (front and right in engine compartment) back to the self-levelling suspension.
I had the corroded parts in mine replaced with copper tubing last year after 1000 miles in France with 3 adults, 2 kids and full baggage on board. Mine was kind of floaty too, but the shocks were ok even on country roads.
Another problem can be using the wrong fluid - equivalent to the MB fluid is not always to the same spec.
