1993 500E Check Engine Light, Star Results
Hello MBWorld,
I just purchased a '93 500E today and I'm doing my best to get it running right.
It had a horrible misfire which I fixed by tightening the loose MAF housing and drying up the moist distributor caps. It's now running very smooth!
Unfortunately, the CEL is still on.
Here is my HHT Printout:
LH1:
004 - Air mass sensor with hot wire B2/2 Volt. too large/small
EZ1:
Control unit does not answer
EFP, TPM, ISC:
No contact with control unit
ASR:
030 - CAN: no reception from EFP N4/1
If anyone can point me to the right direction in solving these issues, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you,
AJ

I cant drive the car around since it isn't registered yet and it doesn't have insurance, but these are the codes that show up after clearing.
I tried to connect to EZ1 and EFP, TPM, ISC manually, but they both do not answer or do not have contact.
Thank you,
AJ

1st, congratulations on the 500E, it's a rare bird! On my 94 E420 I got rid of a recurring CEL (for a while) by replacing all of the breather hose complex around passenger side and rear of engine, plus the cracked rubber hose to EGR & 4 mm plastic hoses that run from down near base of WW reservoir up to EGR area.
The roughness was for sure electrical from the wet caps as I have experienced it few times during cold wet weather despite all new caps, rotors, plugs, plug wires & coils.
1st time was when car was driven from my heated garage only 2 miles to a store & left out in 34*F rain/sleet for 1/2 hour. Upon re-start ran very rough, barely kept running, but within few miles all went away as engine warmed up.
With my M119 engine, once I got all new hoses & ignition parts in place, it idles so smooth can't tell it's running.
Unfortunately the CEL kept coming back on mine, I don't have Star, but my on board diagnostic blinker always gives me 5 blinks (EGR Malf.) plus sometimes 26 blinks (upshift delay faulty). EGR valve is new & tests out operational plus I also replaced the upshift delay relay (lives down under fuse block) and upshift delay operates when engine is cold.
If I clear the 2 codes my CEL will come back on after 150 to 300 or so miles. Seems to be purely emissions related as engine runs perfect and I get 24-25 mpg on trips. It always gives 1 or both of those 2 codes, so decided to quit chasing this. Fortunately Oregon doesn't require emissions testing out here in the rural part of our state. Don

Not sure if this will help but it might.
On my C36 the EGR has a flap inside, more like a reed for 2 stroke motors. The reed builds up with lots of carbon and gets stuck, if you carefully take the EGR apart and scrape the carbon off the reeds, it will help.
Either that, or your EGR tune is completely clogged.

Thanks Joseph. I may try that. Knew about the tube clogging possibility & was considering doing a clean out during the coming Summer warming. Don

AJ,
Congrats on your 500e purchase. I have owned mine for over 12 years and never plan on selling it. These are truly great cars and also very rare.
Once you get the bugs out you will start to really enjoy what you have. I would advise you to join our exclusive 500Eboard.com for answers to your CEL.
MBWorld is a great forum but looking at the replies you are getting (mostly guesses from non-E500E Owners) you need better help. Our 500Eboard can give you that.
Hope to see you there.
Take Care
