Would YOU buy it??

Hello Guys,

Need your opinion and thoughts on this one cause I’m on the fence about buying it…here’s what I’m looking at.

1987 300E with 148k mile
It is a one owner car purchased and always serviced at the local benz dealership.
The owner traded it in on a new 2005 E-class.

Here are the problems with the car:

Left front seat belt broken
Left rear power window does not work
Power head rest on front right passenger goes up but must be pushed down.
Outside temp read out is broken
Sunroof opens VERY slowly (dealer said they would fix if I buy)
Brakes pulse (dealer said they would fix if I buy the car)
Antenna does not go all the way down.

The interior is just about perfect as are the engine and trans. The paint is perfect. Very glossy. It’s the original paint. Car was always garaged. There is a very small amount of rust on both sides of the car where the front jack would be placed if changing a tire.

They are asking 4k for the car.

So, give me your thoughts. Would YOU buy it? What does everyone think it will cost to fix the misc things?

Thanks,
Allan

The problems you list are mostly minor fixes that you can do. Great if the dealer does the sunroof for you and the brakes (but W124s brakes typically pulsate a bit don't they?)

Not bad for 4gs at 148K....got plenty of miles and years left in it I'd say. :y

I had a 88 300E and they didn't pulsate at all.

I agree with Jim. The problems you listed are cosmetic and fairly easy to fix. The important thing is that the car has a clear service history. The brakes should not be a problem. The rotors are probably warped. Not a big deal, new rotors are very reasonable. You may want them to check the airbag if it hasn't been replaced. As long as it cranks, shifts and runs smooth, I'd say you found a winner for $4k.

As mhorn stated check the service records. If those check out well and the car checks out as far as being straight and running correctly I would say buy it. Remember that you are buying a 17 year old car so it won't be perfect and will need work over and beyond what you have listed. I would use anything you find wrong with the car as a bargaining chip with the dealer on price. Good luck to you!!
