Cool Driver's mirror glass

I saw the pics and explanation about replacing a mirror. Can anyone tell me how to replace a driver's side mirror glass on an 1998 E320. It's all discolored.

this is a very simple R&R. about 5 -10 mins tops.

...the has to be OFF in order for you to affix the
mirror to the motor/flange...because you have to lock in the mirror
using the wire.

ack.....okay...i'm heading to the garage....

(pictures worth 10k words)

the pattern on the back of the mirror SNAPS into matching pattern
on the motor/flange (see pics).

line it up and press...listen for snap sound.

lock using retaining wire

walla

update 6/4/2020: if you're looking for dis-assembly photos for the w210 exterior mirror
you can try emailing me and I will search my computer.

Driver's mirror glass

Great pictures Raymond. I'll give it a try when I find a reasonably priced mirror.
Do you have to remove the entire assembly from the car to do it?

nah....i happened to have a spare on the bench. you can do it easily with
the mirror frame/assembly attached to the door. give a shout if you need
pointers.

the metal fingers attached to the mirror just help the mirror glide within the
plastic shell as you manipulate/adjust the mirror

the electrical connection is a simple plug/socket attachment covered by
weather resistant rubber.

just go slow the first time and you'll be fine. then, you'll roll your eyes at
the simplicity of it....and you'll be the expert for future queries on this

p.s. hope you're able to find an inexpensive one. they are quite pricey if
purchased from dealer. try also seller, potomac_german_auto over on
Ebay. i happened to see a pair of these mirrors from diff seller months back,
including covers, for $80 shipped and bought them even though I didn't need
them at the time. figured they'll come in handy some day.

Drivers side mirror "repair"

Raymond and others who contributed to the mirror repair thread, THANK YOU! This worked almost exactly like you described - except for the 4" spring holding the assembly to the sissors mechanism that lets the mirror tilt back and forth. I discovered that was the reason my mirror was too easy to move out - the spring had slipped off the pin behind the motor assembly.

Once I figured that part out (after sweating that somehow a connector for the spring had broken and that caused the whole problem to start) it took all of about 5 minutes to complete.

One question: Our W210 did not have any double sided tape between the motor plate and the mirror. Should I pull the housing off and put some tape in even though it didn't have any to start? Pros or cons?

Thanks to all once again for saving me more than a few bucks, and learning some more about our car in the process!

Happy Hal

the dbl sided tape adds triple redundency.

1 - the plastic fittings snap the mirror to the motor backing plate
2 - the wire springy thing latchs one edge of the plastic to the backing plate
3 - the dbl sided tape really helps as well

considering the fact that replacement of the mirror can be as high as several
hundred dollars, i would recommend a couple swatches of tape.

glad you were able to save a few dollars - every little bit helps!
