Loud gas smell in car........

Ok when I fill up my tank and until it gets under half full I have a loud gas smell in the car. My brother told me it was my gas tank pressure release or something like that. So after looking in the truck I find a loud smell and the black material glued to the tank is loose around the white circle in the truck that has an electronic device hooked to it.

Is there some type of seal that could be defective? The smell is too much to take I have to get it fixed fast. Any ideas what that parts is because that is the source of the smell.

Exclamation Yikes!

Hi, HT.

I do most of my own repair and maintenance, and as much as I can't stand dealers, this is one I certainly wouldn't fool with: get it in is the best advice I can offer.

In the meanwhile you might want to check this thread for a W124 - it sounds much like what you're dealing with:
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w124/80308-smells-gas.html

Good luck and post a follow up once you get it fixed so we can all share.

Thanks and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Thanks to you also greg I think that unit is my problem and I will post the results of what the problem was. As of now the smell is gone because the tank is less than half full.

Yeah, HT, my only concern is that a leak like that could be seriously dangerous; I remember that if you can smell it, that means it's vaporized, and vaporized gas is very explosive (carbs or FI create atomized gas vapor that your spark plugs ignite). Don't try this at home, but I've been told that if there's no vapor you can actually extinguish a match in a bucket of gas, but if there's vapor present the vapor would ignite before the match even reached the bucket. So, keep your tank low until you can get it fixed.
Be safe, my friend, and enjoy the ride.

Ahhggg! Loud, strong, obtrusive, intense, and other words used to describe the smell that I am experiencing are not out of place because they do not have to be used to describe physical attributes.

I have the same problem from time to time, but not always. Less in the winter months, more when it is warmer. I assume that the heat contributes to the vapors.

Anyway, where is the seal to which you are refering? Is it where the filler neck meets the gas tank? If so, how do you get to it. Also, there was some talk on other threads that it could be a vent tube, or the carbon canister.

Tell us about your experience, please.

Hi, just wondering if your problem has been fixed. I have been asked a similar question so I want to know what caused it.

Please update. Thanks!

No but I just don't fill the tank up above the half mark and I don't have the problem. I keep having so many repair issues that I haven't gotten to the gas smell. I take it in again Tuesday and I will have him look at it sense you reminded me. I will post an update when he checks it out. My brother seems to think it is some type of pressure release for the tank but I am sure it comes from the round white plastic piece that is plugged into the tank. It has a wire plugged into it.
