Corrupt Rev Counter
Hello all,
New W210 E55 owner and I've posted in the E55 section, but I feel this may be more a standard W210 E Class question.
I recently followed the DIY for pixel replacement. I wasn't able to fix the pixels. In fact I actually made them worse.
But, what I'm more angry at myself is I've somehow messed up the REV Counter. It now clicks up like a clock when I start the car and ultimately settles around the 6,000 RPM mark constantly.
After driving a little, shutting off the car and restarting, the counter returns to zero and will then function correctly.
ME
What did I do?
I've gotten really good at taking the cluster out so I'm open to anything. Including sending the cluster out for repair.
Here is a picture of me driving about 5 MPH out of my driveway.
Thanks,
Dustin

It sounds like you have the needle pressed down on the shaft to far. Open the IC and pull up on the needle a little.
As for the pixels, since there are about a dozen DIY's out there it is hard to say where you went wrong. Not a difficult job, but can be a bit fiddely attaching a new cable to the LCD screen. If you need detailed instructions from someone who has done this repair multiple times, let me know.

Yeah, I apparently did something wrong.
I guess you live and learn.
I called up BBA Remanufacturing after reading about them here on the board.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore, just send it in and get redone...
Hopefully they can make it work again.

They should be able to make it work without a problem. Just don't drive it without the IC. Let us know how it turns out as this is a very common problem and it is good to know of a place that does good work.

I'm going on a business trip and leaving my car so it should be fine.
I've read more and more about the problem and it sounds like it is the VDO stepper motor.
Hopefully it is an easy fix for them.
I'm going to have them fix the LCD display as well since I broke the ribbon cable opening it up.
I'm too old to be trying these DIY projects.
