Does anyone else think I should go #3 bump pads on the front? i've always heard to go even or larger in the rear, and having a #3 front and #2 rear seems backwards. The car was equipped stock with #2 front and #3 or #4 rear, the stupid mechanic couldn't remember(after I asked them specifically to check), just knew that it was 2 in the front and larger in the back. Anyway 320's got me scared that going up from #1 to #2 won't be a noticeable difference!

First you have to check it for yourself if the mechanic put #1 pads all around.I don't think he put #1 pad on the rear cuz it seems so high for #1 pad.Remove tires look for the pads it has a notch on it .1 notch=#1 pad.

320, I THOUGHT i typed that I have #2 pads rear and #1 front. I want to go up to #2 front's to even it out a bit, and I'm wondering if its going to be enough...

I hope this does not get more confusing. But my 98 E430 had 5 front and 4 rear.
Somehow, I would think that the higher one goes in front (engine weight) and that is the reason why there are 5 pad sizes for the front and only 4 pad sizes for the rear.

I need to get out a ruler and figure out what 4mm really looks like, i'm not sure. Kev none of this is confusing yet =] I think you may be right, but then my mechanic's comments about having bigger rear pads with the stock setup are contradictory of sorts. It does make sense though. Gaston at Autoclass said the most common setup they do is #2 rear and #1 fronts. Some #1 all around, and this is what my friend did with his 98 e320 with no probs... I do know that my diesel engine weighs more than the 320 engine, not sure about the 430 or 55 engine weight...

I didn't get the pads from gaston. I held them in my hand and saw them, two of them were 2 bump, two were 1 bump...

E420
awesome job!
Hey Lightman,
Your modifications to the E300 look GREAT! Those AMG wheels make the car look so much better. I want to put the same wheels on my 97 E420.

Thanks for asking, its doing well. It was just too low with the #1 pad in the front, and ended up having to go with a #4 front, #2 rear. It looks a lot better now, and there is nearly a finger of clearance in the front - still not much, but way better. The back has settled down a bit. Gladly since I went up to the #4 my front camber isn't quite as badly off. The reason mine sits so low in the front apparently is because the diesel engine is SO much heavier. It's great now though. I'll post a good pic when I take one!
*Anyone with a '98-'99 E300 who wants to install H&R Springs/Bilstein Sport shocks and 18" wheels (235/40, 265/35), the proper MB spring pad settings are
#4 front
#2 rear

I really could have taken a #5 in the front, but we couldn't come up with any. The next time my shocks or that area is apart i'll swap out for 5's. 4's are 23mm and 5's are 25mm, not a big difference. You were right 320, thanks for telling me so :p
While some have reported paying $600-800 to have their suspension setups installed, autoclass did it for me at their shop down in miami for a much better price. talk to Gaston.
Install Springs/Shocks - $150 (!!)
Alignment - $69
After we found that everything was too low in the front after the first install, as well as the alignment being off, Gaston changed out the pads and did another alignment at no additional charge. He was very helpful, and I'd recommend that shop to anyone in south florida.

Don't get me wrong, the car and the rims are beautiful but it's an average look!! I have the same rims on my 600 and it also is an average look. Their common rims that's all I meant by it.

probably been said before, but i'll throw in my thoughts too.. i think the car looks wonderful in the second picture you gave us. Maybe its because i'm into this "rap" stuff, lol, but i think the slammed look does look kinda cool 'specially with those rims.
