I own a W124, looking at the W210

All,

I own a 93 400E (108,000 miles) that I absolutely love. I am looking at also buying an E430 - are there any recommendations out there with regard to problems in a given year model? I have asked around and it seems there are some pretty bad electrical problems on some of them.

I appreciate any input you guys might have.

Thanks.

I had had 2 W210's - a 1998 E430 and 2002 E55 AMG. Bad Electrical problems is not a common thing to my knowledge. Most problems seem to be fit and finish and rattles rather than running problems. Many here report replaceing Mass Air Flow Filter and I believe motor mounts (I think). I have mainly had annoying rattling sunroof/headliners on both. If possible get a 2000+ model with the facelift mid model upgrades.

"Facelift" models are best.

2000-on.

i agree w/ the 2 gentlemen above. you have a great MB, W124 is 10x more solid than W210, 108k miles is just break-in mileage. unless your W124 is falling apart, i'd keep driving it and then find a mint 2002 E320 or E420 (or even E55!) in a few yrs.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I'll let you know how it goes. Btw, I also see that Harmonic Balancers need to have been dealt with on the W210s.

I have an 01 E430, and the only things that seem to go bad are sensors for maf, o2, etc. Since I've changed them I haven't had any problems with the car, and never had a thing go wrong with the driveline.

I went from a W124 to a W210 and the one big disappointment is that the W210 is less of an enthusiasts' car than the W124. With the W210, MB moved the E-class toward a more Lexus-like softness than with the W124.

I wouldn't have done it, except my W124, a '95 E300 Diesel, was totaled when an @#!*%! in a red F150 rear-ended me at 70 MPH. That car had 150,000 miles, the structural integrity was great, and it ran like a top. I sure miss that car... Anyway, it was May of 2004 and low mileage W124 cars weren't to be found. So I bought a starmarked 2000 E320 with 30,000 miles. After driving it for 46,000 miles, I can say that its a comfortable and reliable car. At 76,000 miles it still runs great and the structural ingetrity is first rate. But a lot of that incredible road feel from the W124 just ain't there.

BTW, I understand MB made the W211 more firm than the W210 due to the many MB loyalists, like me, who voiced concern about the soft nature of the W210.

Also BTW, I also own a '93 E300 with 140,000 miles that will be shared by my teenage daughters as they get their driver's licenses over the next two years. That's still a great running W124.

Welcome Mistercindy (?)

I have logged 101,000 miles on the W210. HB replaced by MB. MAF replaced by Moi.
Floaty suspension replaced by Moi. Lowered and stiffened. I can make a 90-degree turn at 40mph with the right tires. No floaty, no more.

Nothing you cannot deal with that isn't covered on the forum. Just ensure the previous owner replaced the tranny fluid before 75k miles.
