Quick poll 97-02 e320's

Is the LCD outsidetemp or gear position indicator on your instrument cluster going out ie; losing pixels? Both of mine are on the way out. I think this is very common on e320's.

Is yours?

165k mile 1998 E320, no pixels or anything out.

4XFORE May 2, 2007 12:14 AM

98 e320 with 157k mile .... so far so good ... no missing pixel. :zoom:

hollywierd May 2, 2007 12:23 AM

'98 E320 - 55k miles. trip meter bulb out. all other pixels doing fine.:y

MB>BMW May 2, 2007 03:12 AM

99,000 all mine are out almost non existent

I don't think this is unique to the W210. There are a lot of posts on the various forums so you are not alone. Depending on the specific problem, the fixes range all the way from replacing bulbs behind the instument cluster to replacing the entire cluster (it's pretty rare to be that bad as I recall).

It seems like all our pre face lift 1998 w210s don't have the problem =D

Benzs May 2, 2007 06:41 PM

96 E320 No missing pixels.....

endy May 2, 2007 06:44 PM

no pixels missing :zoom:

lkchris May 2, 2007 07:08 PM

Mine are fine but it's certainly been reported.

On BMWs, too, although BMW replaces them for free.

victorylap May 2, 2007 07:59 PM

I just turned over 80,000 miles - no problem with pixels (pheww)!

This issue doesn't affect the pre-face lift cars. It certainly affects 2000MY and newer cars. Both displays (temp, gear position) on our 2002MY W210S are a mess. I guess BMWs have this issue, too, but the mfg stepped up and corrected the problem.

I think it's around ~$700 to fix it.

1200 for a new cluster. 250 for an ebay job. Just kinda debating with myself whether a new cluster replacement costing 1/12th the cars value is sensible. Problem is, I hate stuff that doesn't work perfectly. Its a problem for me. Maybe I should have bought a Honda.

Not :)

LOL. I agree, it's super-irritating. Somebody said there's a repair shop (PA??) that does it for $700 and it's permanent. Problem is, I doubt you can drive the car while the cluster is out for repair.

mbnj May 3, 2007 09:39 AM

Mine are a mess on the temperature side, not quite as bad on gear side. Thgis is a pixel, not a bulb problem. I also hate to have stuff not working but MB price is too much vs the benefit.

I missed the post on the Pa shop that fixes for $750? Any info would be appreciated. The only post I recall was a place in Mass but you had to remove your own cluster and get it to them and then put it back in yourself and your car was out of service.

96 - all pixels are good. :)

Intrument cluster was replaced at 63k; when I got it back it read 58k:nix: g:D :D d or bad:nix: ? Outside temp.reading piece came loose or is now possibly dead, now reading -37 all the time :nix:
piece is cheap to replace, but I've been to lazy to go underneath to do the job.

might be bad if it is revealed as a glaring discrepancy when compared to
Carfax or MB dealer service records.
