fog light wiring harness

thanks to ohlord, I was able to get at the fog light flap that covers the housing under the car. once i can jack it up this weekend i'll try to get the wiring harness & bulbs replaced.

before i do that, i ordered updated wiring harnesses from the dealer and have them. It's not just the wiring harness in the plastic but two metal pegs with a couple of additional parts. in case i jack it up and don't see where these pieces all fit, is there a DIY on here for fog lamp wiring harness? I don't see it on here or benzworld.org.

thanks!

I think I should be okay once I get it on a lift...I live off 128, just a bit north of waltham, and would be going kind of north shore to get to my parent's house to try this out. if I get it on the lift and still have troubles I'll take you up on the offer! where are you at?

tried getting at the wiring harness today - the end that plugs into the fog lamp is, of course, easy to locate. the other end is hidden up and inside the bumper in a place where one can't see after lifting up the hood. my fingers could feel up and inside the space where the fog lamp wire presumaly plugs into something else, but when going in from the hood, you're pretty much flying blind there too.

couple of questions:

- what is that sensor that is by the fog lamp (driver's side, maybe on passenger side as well, didn't look)? both sets of wires go up and onto a platform and seem to be held together by some sort of plastic tie. not sure where the wiring harness plugs into after that as I couldn't get a good view? I was toying with the idea of trying to cut the plastic tie, but i'd be doing it blind and would probably have cut a wire.

- does the sensor wiring harness and the fog lamp wiring harness come together, then back down into the same compartment, with both wires eventually plugging into the same metal box above the fog lamp...? just wondering if this is where both lead?

well, at least i know how to change the bulbs if i need to...

fju2112:

I think you you would have to remove the front bumper cover to replace these harnesses. It's not difficult at all. Hopefully everything should be clearly exposed.

Cheers

Hey Fran - thanks!

I should have taken pictures while I was in there. There appeared to be a thin metal platform onto which the temp sensor wires and fog lamp wiring harness rested, tied together. I'm not 100% sure of what happens to them from there but it APPEARS all of the wires are tied together then brought back down into that same compartment and plugged into a metal box. that's above my level of expertise even if I could figure out which wires went where and was willing to tear off the electrical tape that kept the wires together, i still wasn't 100% sure of what the wiring harness plugs into.

Definitely need to invest in a bentley manual or WIS DVD

zx - you can share your input on the wiring harness if you'd like...since I can't get a good look at it, you can tell me if that and the temp sensor wires are tied together and where they go exactly? will make my job easier if i go back in there soon.

fju2112,

This is what it looks like with the bumper cover removed. The fog lamp on the LH on picture is held by a piece of wire so it won't hang from the harness. I figure by the length of your new harness you might be able to determine its location on the photo or where approximately it hooks up to.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

hey franasia - thanks for the pic! the bumper, in this picture, is hiding the end of the wire that plugs into...whatever it plugs into. if you have a shot of that same thing but from a birds-eye view, i bet we'd find that the wiring harness is tied down to the bumper and then re-routed back down to plug into a metal electrical box. i know that on the dirver's side it appeared to be the case with the temp sensor wires being taped together w/ the fog lamp wires. since i couldn't see where this join occurred, though, i can't say for sure.

anyone with a WIS dvd?

I took a series of pictures of the front end when working on the horns last year. Sorry I do not have the view you want.

hirn - took it to my mechanic for 100K service after buying the new "heavy duty fog light wiring harness" and had them deal w/ it :-) didn't want to mess around w/ the wiring myself, i'm a novice.
