Rust question
Hi all,
I just noticed several tiny spots of rust on my 2000 E200K, on the door and boot (trunk) lid.
The spots appear to have formed where the paint was chipped off. They're relatively tiny. At this point it isn't worth it for me to take it to a body shop, and in any event I wouldn't trust any of the body shops around here (I'm writing from Romania, 'nuff said).
Is there any product out there that can "arrest" the rust in it's incipient stage, in other words stop it until such time as I can address the problem fully?

Rust killed my 97 e420 so I bit the bullet and traded up to a pristine '02 e430. Essentially it cost $10,000 for a 5 year upgrade and got rid of a rust bucket. 4-Matic was the kicker.

Ohh and as far as the original question....the only thing I've seen that will stop rust once it gets a foothold is a grinding wheel. As for the trunk lid.... my first one rusted through at the key lock and was replaced by MB. The second lid was rusting 3 years later in exactly the same place. Along with 4 quarter panels and two doors.
If what you are dealing with is surface rust and paint chips, I would remove the rust and touch up as best I could and then get to a good body shop asap. If you are dealing with rust attacking from under the paint from behind, you have my sympathies. It takes about two years from first awarness to hole in the car.

If they are just small spots where the paint is chipped I would suggest you buy a paint touch up stick and very carefully apply a spot of paint.
I did that on a chip on my 205 GTI roof and three years later is has'nt got any worse.
Rust inhibitors (that I know of) will discolour the paint and make a small chip very noticeable.

my other car, a 1999 clk320 is spotless so i think it may have just been a bad paintjob leading to paintchips

Illinois here too.
Our 97 had major rust on all 4 quarter panels and two doors, even went through two rear deck lids. Garaged etc. The problem is not the weather.... I've heard that many of the early 210s had improper paint preparation causing the rust.

Mine doesn't appear to be the evil variant, it appears to be from the paint inward.
In any case, once we depart to a more civilised country I'm going to give the old gal the attention she deserves. Romania is hard on cars.
