thinking of getting a 1998 e320 wagon

Saw this wagon for sale: 1998 E320, 122k miles, leather seats in good condition except for slight wear at driver's seat, slight dent at driver's side fender, paint is original, title clear, slight clunk at the front suspension when I hit the brakes, all this for only $5,500. California car. Is this a good find or are there fix ups on the horizon? I don't mind the mileage since I am familiar with old german cars, I am currently driving an 85 BMW 635 CSI with 210k miles. Is this a bargain? Should I get my checkbook and buy this car right now?

take it to a mercedes independent mechanic and pay him $100 (or so) for a inspection. make sure they have the star computer system so they can run all of the mercedes specific codes. make sure there is nothing major wrong with the car. i recently paid $8000 for a 99 with 94K miles, so if there is nothing major i think that would be a reasonable deal. just be ready to throw $500 to $1000 at the car for tranny fluid, plugs (if not already done), oil change and probably some suspension work for the front end and what ever else the inspection reveals. the diy stickies should cover all of this if you are diy person.
one thing to really look at is the rear suspension. make sure there are no leaks in the "shocks." i put that in quotes because they are not really shocks, but a hydraulic suspension. very expensive to replace these fyi.

i love mine and i think you will find a lot of people on this website who will say the same.

where in la are you, i have an indie in torrance who just did an inspection for a friend, i use them when i can't do something myself. they are great and they know their stuff...i have been using them for about 5 years. they also have star computer. it is a 3 bay operation, so it is a small scale operation. 210 wagon

I have a 98 E320 wagon 4matic with 100000 kilometers (60,000mi) ...absolutely love it,what a great ride. It will need maf, cps, ball joints, lots of light bulbs or replacement lens assembly..all easy for a diy'er. It's hard on tires but that might be the 4matic ..great for the snow up here in Canada. I get most parts from Autohaus.com. At that mileage a lot of what I mentioned will have been done. Very easy to maintain. And a great buy providing it checks out.

Thank you all. Love this board, especially my neighbours, makes me optimistic in this purchase. But yes, I'll heed on your advices, I will take it to my mechanic at the Valley and have him check the car out. i can do a bit of DIY but if there are tools or knowledge I lack, i usually go to my indie mechanic. Do not want to be a lowballer but the car is really a nice ride but this being my first MB, what do I know? Is the price not reasonable enough? I'll let you all know what happens tomorrow. Thanks again.
