From inside the trunk, remove the cover and replace the bulb. I always use an MB bulb because there once (older models) was an alleged issue where different bulbs could end up frying the cruise control circuit.

Always remember to replace the bulbs in pairs(ie left and right side) as the other side is just as old and will go out soon as well. Also, the new bulb will be much brighter than the old bulb on the other side.

Double check the bulb with a DMM or continuity checker to be sure it's burned out. It's a COMMON problem for brake light bulbs on driver's side to lose contact. A trick I picked up from someone out here is to seat the bulb socket and then back off a little (10-15 degrees?) to get a new contact surface. I tried it and no problems for about 6 mos. now. Details on bulb replacement are in owner's manual.

What Richard says is true. These older W210's seem to have a left side brake light problem. The bulb heat causes all kinds of issues mainly burning the contact surface. You may have to replace your left light assembly. Not a hard job. Only 4 or so screws hold her in. I had to replace mine and got the part from someone off this site if I remember. He replaced his stocks with newer year styles and sold me his left side for like $30.00...........

Good luck.

Jeff
