1996 E300D air intake Q & EGR bypass method

Hey folks - I picked up a nice E300D a few weeks back and have been working on getting it sorted & ready to go for 1MM miles! I looked into some history on EGR bypass and decided to merely cut the metal connection pipe (exhaust to EGR valve) about 2" above the exhaust conn side. I cut a piece of sheetmetal & made a ceramic wool gasket to plug / cap the exhaust side. For the EGR side, I took the shorter 2" end of the metal tube, and installed it into the air cleaner box above the filter, and epoxy sealed it in place. I then took the EGR side of the tube, rotated it towards the fender a bit and installed a 24" length of 1" ID rubber hose between the two tube ends. My egr is now fed with clean filtered air! While my '96 does not even have a tie into the ECU for EGR (other than looking for functionality via vacuum - I know due to knocking the vac hose off & getting a code plus rough shifting). Thought this might apply to the newer, ECU-sensitive models as a solution for EGR bypass without electronic tomfoolery.

My question - my air intake (to the air cleaner box) is a short 45 deg elbow open-ended, pointed towards the radiator. About as far from a cold air intake as possible - is this standard issue, or is mine missing something which would provide fresh air flow???

Thanks

Scott

W210 E300 turbo diesel
cool idea !
have not seen one, with fresh air feedback.

couple of my toughts:
- thought of doing a EGR delete, aka chip,
- would want to clean the intake, what is expensive,
so want to wait , when doing the injectors,...
- one of my old time mechanics , said, to leave it alone,
just feed it kleen diesel, etc,...

also looked at purge stuff, did one with the fuel filter,..
and stumbled on the water jar bubbler, ...
and looking into , doing some acetone ,...

so down the road, thinking, maybe leave the EGR,
add a water separator to fuel filter,
add a oil separator to EGR,
add a water bubbler jar,
maybe figure out to add peroxide,
once in a while, run seafoam through.

for the simpler EGR delete,
since it will burn hotter , faster,
acetone will slow it down, to run cooler, and cleaner.
also to run B20 biodiesel with it, be a lot easier.

one more, I'd be a little weary , to do a EGR delete, without cleaning the intake, just afraid , the old crud you really back in , and make it worse.
anyway, still have no clue, but my main goal is to get more MPG,
as such, a EGR delete is not much,
where with a bubbler, I could maybe squeeze out more, and keep it cleaner.

what you think ?

oh for million miles,....
did 2-stroke oil,.... little added lubrication,....
found out , on a technical paper,.... MMO is worse
kleen diesel give a little, even less the 2-stroke oil
B2 is better than all the others, so even B5 is best,
so for me B10-B20+ and acetone, should be super duper,
but don't forget the fuel filter,... every oil change +
for engine,... I put in some MOS2.
if you run synthetic, or thinner stuff , you could throw in some lucas oil stabilizer ,
has more detergent, but also thickens it a bit.
oh, you should have gotten a saab,.... they'll give you a new one ,
if you ever hit 1 million miles,.... just kidding, but don't see doing 1M miles,
that be another 40 years of driving for me,... won't live that long
